A 🧵in verse about Dennis Hastert I wrote "The Ballad of Dennis Hastert" when his abuse scandal broke. I offer it one last time as a fitting epitaph: Dennis Hastert, known as Denny,
Rose from humble coach to Speaker.
Few but Denny knew that when he
Was a coach his flesh was weaker. (1/4)
A closeup of Dennis Hastert, looking. both annoyed and cornered, his tongue protruding slightly from between his compressed lips.

"No fatties, no trannies, no beardos, no weirdos." Hegseth's vision for the military always sounds like an old gay personals ad written by a fussy Bloomingdale's necktie salesman named Bryce.

Every year on this day I recall the awful moment when Frasier's producer Maggie Blanc phoned to tell me that the show's co-creator David Angell and his wife Lynn were on the first plane to hit the towers. A week later the Advocate asked me to write about David for their 9/11 issue. (1/2)
David Angell sitting in Martin's chair on the Frasier set.A photo of an article in the Advocate. There's a smiling picture of David Angell. The heading reads: "A creator and executive producer of Frasier is remembered by his colleague Joe Keenan. The text of the article reads: One day in the Frasier writer’s room we were toying with the idea that Niles, insolvent and desperate during his epic divorce from Maris, might stoop to writing a quickie self-help book, the sort that shamelessly flatters its readers in the hopes of achieving best-sellerdom. We needed a title for it, something both punchy and pandering. As we were all calling out uninspired suggestions I glanced over at David Angell. He smiled to himself then, adopting a look of foot-stomping petulance, said, “It’s Not Your Fault, Dammit!’ by Dr. Niles Crane.”
We laughed at its ludicrous perfection, or at least those of us who’d heard him did. David was very quiet, very soft-spoken. Unlike many humor writers who like to think out loud (making it hard for others to think at all), David mulled each comedy challenge in silence, speaking only when he felt he had something good, which he pretty much always did. He brought the same quiet wryness to his conversation and his remarks were all the funnier for his murmured, throwaway delivery. He understood, to paraphrase Dorothy Parker, that a boy’s best friend is his mutter.
He was a wonderful writer, always smart, always witty, the dialogue pitch perfect. Sometimes in the room his usual low-key drollness would give way to bursts of inspired goofiness that were both hilarious and incongruous, like a humanities professor interrupting his lecture on Middlemarch to share his Porky Pig impression. Most of all he understood that a good show wasn’t about jokes; it was about people, and telling stories about them that involve us and surprise us and make us need to know what happens next.
As good a writer as David was, he was an even better person, unfailingly kind and generous. I’ll always be especially grateful for the su…

When I wrote for Frasier I never thought about what our apartment set was saying, except that Frasier was pretty posh and had a kitchen that rendered him inaudible to people six feet away. My niece Meaghan Roddy has thought about the set a *lot* and proves it in this terrific article for Dwell.

The beloved sitcom’s set introduced audiences to a vision of wealth that was quietly sophisticated instead of gaudy—its showpiece Chihuly notwithstanding.

🎶 "Sit Down, You're Blocking The Vote!"🎵 Six years ago the great Brad Oscar and I borrowed a song from Guys & Dolls to mock Trump's refusal to concede the 2020 election. Satirical ditties tend to date fast, but 6 years later Trump's more set on denying his loss than ever. To which we still reply:

Pope Leo tells us that divine mercy is infinite, so I won't presume to guess Lindsey Graham's posthumous destination. But I do know for certain that whether he's now sitting next to God or to Satan, he's grinning obsequiously, slapping his thigh, and saying, "Good one, boss!"

I can report that the episode's back. It was pulled because a KACL scene began with a test of the emergency broadcast system which—God knows why—the FCC now bans for entertainment use. (Talk shows have been heavily fined for deploying it in gags.) The replacement noise is absurd. But the ep is back!

🧵The great James Burrows died today. I owe my TV career to him and to the Charles brothers. They read my first book and invited me to write a pilot. The result, Gloria Vane, was about a 1930s movie star. Jimmy directed. What does a great comedy director add that’s not on the page? One example: 1/

Does anyone else watch Trump and his war cabinet bluff their way through press questions about Iran and wonder how it might play as a musical number based on “The Press Conference Rag” (“We Both Reached For The Gun”) from Chicago? Just me? I thought so. Here’s how I imagine it:
“The Trump Iran Press Conference Rag”
By Joe Keenan (with apologies To Kander & Ebb)

[PART ONE]

PRESS:
Where’d the war start?

TRUMP:
Mar-a-Lago.

PRESS:
Who began it?

TRUMP:
Netanyahu.

PRESS:
Why’d you join him?

TRUMP:
Blame Maduro.
I assumed that war was hell
Till Venezuela went so well.

PRESS:
How’s it going?

TRUMP:
Very smoothly!

PRESS:
And the girls school?

TRUMP:
Whoops-a-daisy!

PRESS:
And our own dead?

TRUMP:
Kinda sad, but
When the bugle’s playing “Taps”
I always wear my nicest caps.

LINDSEY GRAHAM (in drag):
Coffins to salute—even on golf days! Oh, you poor, poor dear.

PRESS:
What’s the goal here?

TRUMP:
Peace and safety.

PRESS:
And regime change?

TRUMP:
That was Tuesday.

PRESS:
But the main one?

TRUMP:
Jeffrey Epstein!
He’s what I was hiding from
The day Iran reached for a bomb.

Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, oh yes,
Oh, yes Iran was planning to reach for
A bomb, a bomb, a bomb, a bomb,
Oh, yes, a big ballistical bing-bang bomb!

PRESS:
Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, oh yes,
Oh, yes Iran was planning to reach for
A bomb, a bomb, a bomb, a bomb,

This war’s sensible
And defensible,
If less end-able
Than commence-able

PETE HEGSETH
We’re so glorious.
Facts don’t worry us

Failure’s victorious.

Catherine O’Hara had a gift for playing dim, vain, hysterical divas in way that both exposed and forgave their worst excesses. Her eyes! They were always wide with either fear or menace, both equally funny. I worked with her only once when she played a guest role in a pilot. Once was not enough.
