A piece I did for the @astracordis.space TTRPG ~*
Illustration in green and blue tones, showing a rocky desert at night. On it, a brutalist building and a tall, monolith-like structure stand side by side. On top of the monolith there's a bright sphere, which at first could be mistaken by a moon on the sky.

My poem "Darkness is a Body" in the most recent issue of SLAB out of Slippery Rock University.
A poem in an open literary magazine.

Darkness is a Body

Whether the heart or the left hand
or the eyes or the bottom of the foot

There is that place light refuses to touch
where the unboned squirm and wriggle

I have felt the darkness grow, a sore
weeping on the skin, a tattoo of scars

The bathwater turned to blood with a touch
the ground salted beneath my footsteps

Imagine the sun a single, unblinking eye
and the darkness its lungs and genitals

The better to scream your name, the better
to fuck you all up inside of it

Night with a moon cataract blind
a bonfire between us, an x-ray of light

Bones visible in a blankness of flesh
shadows sewn through skinThe cover of s literary magazine being held by a barely visible white hand. The cover is light green with a roasted drawing of a cat with a baseball cap, t shirt, and nose ring playing guitar. At the top left is written SLAB, which is the name of the journal. This is issue 20.

music can do a lot of things for sure. Apparently when it comes out of birds it can be converted into power. I’m sure that’ll go well for everyone/society Really enjoyed "On the Effects and Efficiency of Birdsong: A Meta-Analysis" by @ftberner.bsky.social @diabolicalplots.com tinyurl.com/bd9j6utx
Mr. Colombo said he had a new bird, and a new mélo-kit, and did Marco want to come over and see it, he asked, as he beckoned his neighbor inside. Marco wasn’t really interested—he just wanted to crash on the sofa and open a beer and forget about the long day at work—but Mr. Colombo, like most people in Rome, never really took no as an answer; he only waved his hands more forcefully and herded him in, talking without pause about plumage and trills and transducers and accumulators, and Marco followed meekly.

Writing a book isn't about competition, it isn't about winning or getting rich, it's about sitting down with your fucked-up thoughts and weird ideas and putting them on paper to traumatize people who read them. AI will never get that part right.

She kept speaking but I gave up listening. This absurd tree-instrument was sounding its music and I was fly-trapped in its spider web. The timbre was the thing, I realised. What the discovery of harmony had done for pitch, that was the magnitude of what was happening here with regard to timbre.
My fascination was so intoxicating that when Mitr paused for breath I said, “I accept.”

Yes in thunder. My syllabus statement:

Generative A.I.
This class helps you to be a better writer and thinker. Generative AI (ChatGPT, Copilot, and other platforms) is neither writing nor thinking. Any use of Al in this class (whether to write, brainstorm, outline, or summarize) will be considered a violation of academic integrity. It undermines your intellectual development, for one: AI content is often inaccurate or hallucinatory and is always boring, banal, and average. This is by design, as generative Al works by predicting the most obvious or basic sequencing of words. Good writingwriting that is persuasive, powerful, lively, funny, surprising, rousing, insightful, transformative, provocative-requires human work. Human creativity is weird and variable and uneven, but it holds the capacity for growth, revelation, empathy, and brilliance. We urge you not to abandon the glorious experiential potential of human messiness and transformation for the tedium of robot sentences.
One further reason to abjure generative Al, especially in a class on environmental literature: in addition to its counterproductivity to your work as a writer and thinker, Al is enormously environmentally destructive.

It is Christmas morning, and it is snowing.

It feels right, and like you’ve somehow been waiting for this all along. You pause only long enough to recover your breath, then dash from your verandah and hold your arms out to it in welcome or embrace, tilting your head skyward and opening your mouth as flakes fall on your tongue and eyelashes.

You ignore the little voice inside you saying Wait, stop, what? What is this? This is wrong. It’s been too long since you’ve had an avenue to any kind of joy at all, and you grasp at this strange, unexpected chance to feel like a child again. Not thinking, not trying to project forward into the future, not being fearful, just being. You sway on your feet, half-twirling.

landscape of branches and roots growing around a small puddle of water. a blue raven stands above it with a feather in his beak, peering down into the water.three small abstract landscape paintings. Green seaweed looking one, a green stone formation that can be a city or forest, and a green and yellow natural formation that can be a leaf breaking apartTwo book cover paintings. a blue one with a man and a sword, looking tired and worn, and a burnt hand besides him. the background is abstract shapes hidden by misty swirls.

The second image is of a city. There is a crowd of people that are just forms, and one man standing out in a red trenchcoat and white eyes staring at the viewer.dark blue landscape of two woods meeting for a conversation. It can also possibly be a single tree split down the middle.
