If diesel exports become banned, they will produce less diesel. which also means they’ll produce less gasoline since they both come out of the same barrel

diesel is already at all-time highs, and a diesel export ban may bring some relief to diesel at the expense of gas prices- which could start to rise (as cutting output would hit gasoline hardest). if diesel exports get banned, gas prices could rise toward record levels.

These are the conditions that bring on civil wars, and the GOP is doing this willfully, indeed gleefully. If they love their country what is the point of creating this much division? It’s going to rip the country apart. Why? So they get the thrill of telling other people what to do? To what end?

There’s nothing more Un-American than trying to restrict the free press. Maybe lying about our elections and inciting an insurrection on the US Capitol, but that’s beside the point. Donald Trump has both on his resume.

This is one of the unspoken keys to American political instability right now: Congress can’t do anything. It seems like it’s “just the system,” and yes the Constitutional structure does slow stuff down, but it’s also a political choice. And it could be changed.

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.

Soviet Census, 1930s; US Census, report today in the Guardian .
NKVD head Genrikh Yagoda, who had been in charge of the forced
collectivization (as well as Stalin’s poison laboratory), fell out of favor
for reporting the negative public reaction to the show trials. He was
demoted, then denounced, then tried in the third show trial in 1938,
and executed. His replacement underwent a similar fate and was
executed in early 1940.
“Execution was the favored solution to every problem, includ-
ing those caused by previous executions,” writes Adam Hochschild.
“When the national census showed that his reign of terror was
shrinking the country’s population, Stalin ordered the members of
the census board shot. The new officials, not surprisingly, came up
with higher figures. Between about 1929, when Stalin had van-
quished his rivals and concentrated power in his hands, and his death
in 1953, most historians now estimate that he had been directly re-
sponsible for the deaths of somewhere around 20 million people.” --Orwell's Roses After having forcibly retired thousands of dedicated civil servants who held a gobsmacking amount of institutional knowledge, the Trump administration has increasingly made impossible demands of those who remain. In June, they ordered the Census Bureau to stop using the most sophisticated techniques available to protect the confidentiality of the public’s responses when publishing data. Government scientists were told that they must return to the statistical dark ages and use methods that horrify their peers. By micromanaging the tools that experts can use, politicians are forcing civil servants to choose between publishing unusable data, risking the privacy of Americans’ data, or simply not publishing data.

In August, another controversy roiled the Census Bureau. Partisan data geeks leveraged a program designed to help the government recruit talent. Once there, they obtained access to government data and leveraged the bureau’s brand to publish a report arguing that numerous non-citizens voted in the 2020 election, reinforcing Trump’s conspiracy theory that he did not lose the election fair and square.

This report is anomalous in countless ways: it’s unsigned, lacking methodological detail, devoid of error metrics, and rushed through without oversight by the bureau’s experts. But it doesn’t matter how bad the report was (and it’s truly abysmally bad). The reputational damage was done. Economists and advocates from across the partisan spectrum were outraged at this blatant politicization of the Census Bureau.

The Trump administration doubled down. Days later, the commerce department eliminated the language that prohibited political interference from the agency’s official scientific integrity policy. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/sep/10/census-trump-congress
