Eric Foner is also good, but Du Bois should be read too: there’s force in his every word.

What the people who are spiking mother and child health in the US stand for, beyond themselves, is perhaps a mystery, but they surely don’t care about the American people.

Texas Pediatricians Face Paxton Investigations for Vaccinating Children (Gift Article)
Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general and Republican Senate candidate, has alleged a sprawling profit-driven conspiracy. Pediatricians say the accusations are an attempt at intimidation.

Americans have never been angrier with one another. But polarization is not the disease—it is the response to a revanchist movement seeking to roll back sixty years of social progress. 🆕 by @lilymasonphd.bsky.social muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/a...

Come on, we all know that if a Republican does it it’s patriotic, right? Why I’m surprised people everywhere, but particularly at work, aren’t falling asleep sitting up out of a profound sense of love for the father of the country. Surgeons! Air traffic controllers! Stock market traders! Sleep!

In the US the then head of CBS famously said that Trump “may not be good for America, but it's damn good for CBS." They got the “may not be good” in spades. And CBS News was purged by a Trump buddy. With that very live—and clearly dangerous—example, why would the BBC go there?

Frenchfold @frenchfold.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I get that journos love a spicy story, and Nige’s lies are definitely provocative (while the Lib Dems campaign for boring stuff like social care) but honestly, the BBC seems so desperate for eyeballs that they choose attention over public service in their political coverage every time.

Frenchfold @frenchfold.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
The amount of “earned media” attention the BBC lavishes on Reform is staggering. They regularly command 25% of the coverage, and are treated like the government in waiting, despite having 1.25% of the MPs.

True. And what are his actual policies beyond race-baiting? It’s forcing the Bank of England to take up crypto (hence the £72m), which solves nothing and only makes trouble for the economy. Like…hmm…Brexit?

Faragists rely on the narrative of "men on boats" creating a de facto Fifth Column in the UK to feed their agenda and to stir up hostility and to win votes and ultimately power. Suckers fall for it. Media boosts it. We've been here so many times before and you'd think we'd all wise up but hey ho

This a moment when one whole arm of American religion has stoped making spiritual demands of its adherents. If Roger Finley is correct it should experience membership decline, but who knows how predictive his model is? Or how persuasive being told that what you already in believe is THE truth is?

If diesel exports become banned, they will produce less diesel. which also means they’ll produce less gasoline since they both come out of the same barrel

diesel is already at all-time highs, and a diesel export ban may bring some relief to diesel at the expense of gas prices- which could start to rise (as cutting output would hit gasoline hardest). if diesel exports get banned, gas prices could rise toward record levels.

Because whatever fantasy the GOP has of creating some high-tech apartheid state, the real world gets a vote. Your fellow citizens, even as you grind them into the dust, get a vote. Everyone suffers in a scenario like this. Cruel societies are never stable. Cruel societies are never prosperous.

These are the conditions that bring on civil wars, and the GOP is doing this willfully, indeed gleefully. If they love their country what is the point of creating this much division? It’s going to rip the country apart. Why? So they get the thrill of telling other people what to do? To what end?

There’s nothing more Un-American than trying to restrict the free press. Maybe lying about our elections and inciting an insurrection on the US Capitol, but that’s beside the point. Donald Trump has both on his resume.

The thrum of ambient fear is the medium these opportunists swim in. What’s helpful is a gesture to remind people of their courage, to remind people that even though institutions aren’t perfect they can demand change. The clothespins the French used in the 2002 election is a good example of this.

This is one of the unspoken keys to American political instability right now: Congress can’t do anything. It seems like it’s “just the system,” and yes the Constitutional structure does slow stuff down, but it’s also a political choice. And it could be changed.
