There is absolutely no viable path forward for this country that doesn’t hinge on extreme accountability for everyone involved in this administration. They’re going to whine about politicization and credulous media types will echo them, but the thing is, they’ve committed tons of obvious crimes!

One more thing about the death penalty before going offline. As disgusted as we should be by Trump's bloodlust, we should NOT lose sight of the CENTRAL role of Democrats in upholding, expanding, and enabling this system that seems to horrify so many people right now. It really cannot be said enough.

I genuinely mean this. I cannot imagine a more bleak dystopian notion than the idea of all art being turned into slop designed to coddle my exact perceived intentions. The point of literature, film, music, and art is to be exposed to the interior lives of others. Who are these people.

Just did some number crunching using latest (Oct 1) ECMWF seasonal data, and I must say that I've never seen such high predictive confidence in a very wet California winter. This is a truly extraordinary forecast amid a record-strength El Niño event. [Thread: please read to end.]
Model-relative sea surface temperature anomalies for November 2026–January 2027. The supplied grid is displayed without added smoothing or coastal filling. Beige marks land and gray marks missing ocean values. The main colour scale spans -2 to +10°F, with white at zero. Hot pink marks anomalies above +10°F. This map does not establish an operational ENSO category.

This year's El Niño continues its climb into uncharted waters; Niño3.4 region anomalies are now at a 3.4C above normal (how fitting!), higher than any prior El Niño event on record. September monthly Niño3.4 anomalies also set a record at 2.9C (beating 2015 and 1877's 2.75C).

Anyway, make a difference, spread a needed cultural shift: refer to a bug as "they" today.
000
Garrett @frandsong.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
It's very similar, I feel, to the "I love animals (but also eat them)" disconnect: "I love animals (and other kingdoms of life) but will only refer to them as an "it""
000
Garrett @frandsong.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
This is one of the most basic but impactful changes I've made over the years as a vegetarian/vegan. It remains one of the most radicalizing and apparently contentious attitudes I've adopted. It's insane how ingrained "it" is in this culture and the disconnect people have between attitudes & actions
000
Garrett @frandsong.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Some people can muster that for common pet animals which demonstrates they recognize "worth" on some level and thus choose which organisms "matter" and which don't. That wasp? They (or she, likely). Those Nostoc bacteria? They. Easy.
000
Garrett @frandsong.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
All the time is a great time to remember that organisms deserve, at a bare minimum, not having "it" used to refer to them. Living creatures deserve respect. Words carry meaning and reflect values. "It" conveys attitudes that they are just objects and makes it easier to "dehumanize" them.

Two completely different issues that by no means are contradictory. Prisons are institutional. Public shaming is social. We do not get to control people feelings. And reform by no means should require putting someone back to the position they held before. Especially as a media figure.

In deep caves, where sulfur-rich water bubbles up then outgasses, an ecosystem of bacteria metabolize the sulfur gas into sulfuric acid, dissolving stone, expanding the cave, and producing snot-like strings of acidic biofilm ... snotites. Let's talk about them.
Snotite formation looks like long thin strings of mucous dripping water from a red gypsum cave ceiling.
