⚒️ 🧪 A M7.7 earthquake just struck Flores, Indonesia. The USGS estimates that hundreds could have died, although the news currently reports far fewer. The earthquake seems to have occurred on a known “backthrust” that runs along the north coast of the island. Learn more:

Impressive! I wonder how common these kinds of videos will become - we are also seeing a remarkable (and horrifying) influx of videos showing buildings shaking and then collapsing. (And of course, figuring out what's real and what is fake is an increasing problem.)

⚒️ 🧪 A M6.8 earthquake struck Kyushu, Japan today. Large quakes in Japan are common and often pass without much notice, but this one is serious - instead of occurring offshore in the subduction zone, it is a shallow, strike-slip event near Kumamoto. Damage and deaths have already been reported.

⚒️ 🧪 One week has passed since the M7.5 earthquake in Venezuela. FUNVISIS has detected >600 aftershocks so far, concentrated in the east, near Caracas. New satellite imagery shows >3 meters of likely surface offset in the same area - perhaps explaining the aftershocks, and contributing to damage.

⚒️ 🧪 A M6.2 earthquake below southern Italy is a reminder of the subduction zone lurking beneath the Tyrrhenian Sea. At 250 km depth, this is not one of Italy’s dangerous earthquakes. But it did lead us to a *totally normal* conceptual model for the wildly complicated tectonics of the Mediterranean!

Today saw the largest earthquake of 2026 (so far): a M7.5 near Tonga, with moderate shaking. Residents of Tonga were told by authorities to evacuate in case of a tsunami, even though the US Tsunami Center said it was safe. Read our post to find out why both groups might have been right. ⚒️ 🧪
