Today is World Day Against the Death Penalty. Let us seek to end this inhumane and immoral practice around the world, especially here in America. It is so deplorable that in the 21st century this is going on in a modern democracy.

Fungal Misadventure: a short short story I wrote, which I've decided to tell here in the form a thread, using eleven photos I've taken of excellent fungi on my walks, and one I took of quite a fancy chicken...

So many mammograms in the last year, and I hated every one of them (and also feared it, for whatever extra lump might show up). One point of light were all the techs knowing exactly what kind of ordeal it was & helping me through it.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

“Life in the Shower” - a fun little series I started a while back and just updated! When you’re in your own shower…
A very simple cartoon of someone standing in their shower, staring into the middle distance, perhaps wondering why they somehow yet again forgot to buy more shampoo, despite having been to the shops twice today for various other things. Of course, going to the shops a third time, AFTER your shower to buy shower things is entirely unhinged, so it’s going to have to wait till tomorrow, and who knows if they’ll remember any of this by then.

My mom, Barbara Green, died two years ago this week. I wrote this for her. It is not about work. My mother scheduled her death for 10 a.m. on a Wednesday. Two years earlier, she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer — metastatic, we learned one horrible afternoon at Johns Hopkins, which meant surgery wasn’t […] The post my mom appeared first on Ask a Manager.

This is interesting. You get assigned to being born at a random place and time in history, to see what a typical person's life might have been like then. Unfortunately I was born in 1403 in the valley of Mexico and died at age 4 from dysentery.

Sometimes society at large rejects certain ideas because they’ve been thoroughly shown to be wrong and also because they suck and the people who espouse them suck and when someone comes around arguing those ideas should be part of some edgy modern debate we can and should shun them and move on.

Some of the richest people in the world want a racial caste system, and they want scholarly backing for that in the form of racist pseudoscience. And a lot of ostensibly non racist people quietly agree, and don’t like to see those who peddle that pseudoscience excluded from mainstream institutions.

I read this book, partly because of the rave reviews on this app here, partly because I love that title and book cover (yes, I judge books by their cover) and will now urge the boyfriend to read it. It was deeply moving and I’ll probably read it again to fully grasp & appreciate the language.

As far as woke 1 & woke 2, that is all utter bullshit because woke is Black people's word from our community that they stole & appropriated to do all kinds of outlandish things with, & neither woke 1 nor woke 2 have anything to do with what woke has always meant & continues to mean to Black folks.

Just asked to fill out a survey for Tumblr about their Premium services. So, here's my answer for their final open answer question, "Is there anything else you want to tell us?" *cracks knuckles*
I dunno man, the Internet just sucks now. It’s ten years past its prime, 'cause all the sites that created the things that people talked about on Tumblr are gone.

Sites like Tumblr, but also Shitty-X/Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest — all of that was only good because the rest of the Internet existed. Tumblr's the least bad, don't mistake me, but y'all are the big box megamarts that crowded out the corner stores where people hung out and made the cool stuff they wanted to share. Without them, all sites like you can do is reference each other, echos of echos, when it’s not a sales pitch for some drop-shipped garbage or AI slop.

The internet's dead, my dudes, and it's not coming back for $6.99/month.

Same in the old building I teach in in Brussels: old windows, poor ventilation. During the heat wave late June we had our pupils go home at noon because there was nowhere else to go. When it’s nearing 30 degrees we can go outside and play in the park. When it’s 37 degrees there’s only our basement.
