2026 as a whole is now on track to end up roughly tied with 2024 as the warmest year on record in ERA5, at 1.6C above preindustrial. And 2027 waiting in the wings to be quite a bit warmer on the back of a record-setting El Nino event.

After a nearly month-long plateau Nino3.4 region temperatures (ONI) are on their way back up. We've now surpassed 1982/1983 and are only behind 2015/2016 in terms of maximum daily values. And its only early September.

August 2026,according to NASA,had a temperature anomaly of +0.82C vs. 1991/2020 baseline and was the hottest on record as follows: 2026: +0.82C 2024: +0.72C 2023: +0.61C 2025: +0.60C 2016: +0.43C Note the gap with the 2016 Nino year.
