Nice community meeting last week! @danielanemetschek.bsky.social gave us a sneak peak into the metadatabase (we cover >14.000 dendrometers already!), while @daniellecreek.bsky.social led the discussion on ongoing activities and priorities. Happy to see the community getting involved.

Early defoliation, leaf browning and wilting and shedding of green leaves in Switzerland (Jura) and Southern Germany (Black Forest) - beech but also cherry and maple affected - heat and drought stress - and no rain forecasted for the next weeks. This is not unexpected - this is climate change!

In Japan, valuable trees are relocated instead of cut down during development. Arborists use nemawashi, a technique combining horticultural knowledge and modern engineering, to prepare the trees for relocation.

Japan does not cut down centuries-old trees for development. Instead, experts spend months preparing their roots and relocating them
When roads, railways or new buildings are planned, centuries-old trees are often among the first casualties of development. In Japan, however, some of the country's most valuable trees are given a sec...

🌳 Tree mortality in 🇫🇷 France rose 1.5–4× (2015–2023). 500k+ trees analysed; warmer winters & springs are top drivers. Even wet springs increase mortality risk via 'structural overshoot'. Seasonal climate combos matter more than single extremes. #forests #climatechange www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Yes, forest trees die of old age. But the warming climate is killing them faster
The warming climate is killing Australia’s forest trees at a faster rate. This offers a glimpse of what may lie ahead for forests globally.
