And digitally coloured. And that’s that. #Shiptember done and dusted. Bit of a cheat from me because all these were drawn ages ago - still not able to draw because of tendonitis. Which is REALLY becoming a fucking chore.

Shiptember No. 30. ‘By Your Imagination, To The Stars My Friend'. #shiptember #Drawing #Scifi #Spaceship
A pen drawing of a spaceship. A long hull with a big engine at the back. Underneath, strange protruding bits and pieces. To one side, three figures stand silhouetted.

The captions reads: By Your Imagination, To The Stars My Friend.

Because Fallen London is primarily a narrative game and more oriented towards prose than dialogue, we find it benefits from conventional writing skills, of the kind that would be helpful for writing a novel or short story.
Our writing is also denser in choice and consequence than is usual in video games. We use an approach we call quality-based narrative. Qualities, in our parlance, might represent any of the following (and other things besides):

A character’s capabilities which we can test when the player attempts challenges – for example, how persuasive they are, or their skill with Shapeling Arts.
Complications and menaces. These might track how scandalised polite society is by a character’s behaviour, or mounting peril on an underground ocean.
Currencies and resources. These might be physical, like souls in bottles, or abstract, like terrible secrets.
Aspects of world state that reflect the progress of their current activities, like a complex theft or archaeological expedition.

Night. The House of Chimes - a tower which you might immediately think of as Big Ben - is adrift in the River Thames. It still seems to be keeping time. In the background, a large, alien building looms over the city of London.

I've never seen this version of "CPU is too fast to play this old game" before. If your CPU runs at faster than ~4.29 GHz, something in Independence War 2 integer overflows and it thinks your CPU is actually super slow. This really sucks 😭
So what’s actually happening? the game tracks time using CPU cycles, and somewhere along the way, it casts the frequency into a uint32_t. When the frequency is too high, that value overflows, and the game ends up thinking the CPU is way slower than it actually is. That messes up the internal timing. As a result, the engine compresses too many physical and gameplay events into each tick. And because the CPU is still running fast, everything in-game goes into hyperspeed.

It only feels “radically progressive” because we’ve spent 40 years normalising radically regressive ideas. This was broadly how Britain worked from 1945–79, when average GDP growth was 2.6% a year — compared with 1.9% in the post-Thatcher years. It works www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

I have said before and will again: any electoral reform commission must NOT rule out a change of system BEFORE the next election if needed. We cannot risk a minority vote handing a huge majority to any party that would take a shredder to democracy itself.

Brilliant from the Govt. but will not be achieved without acknowledging that the Home Office is directly responsible for pushing people into homelessness. NRPF, high visa fees, bureaucracy in applications, lack of access to legal aid etc. all contribute already. The changes will make this worse.

How is it free? Because the absence of tax and overheads allows a vast investor bubble, which will burst and cause a financial crisis like 2008, when we haven't even recovered from that yet. You think the far right came from nowhere? No, it came from a financial crisis. Which we are still in.

Just tax the compute. Datacentre? Cool. Fund your own power generation and water reservoirs, and then pay tax for every computational act your datacentre does. And we'll use the tax income to offset societal and job damage. Overnight, AI becomes something AI giants are desperate to restrict.

And as a reminder - vaccine innovations can & have ended the threat of many diseases over the last century (at least technically, barring the hopefully temporary outbreaks caused by anti-vaccine paranoia).
Chart from Our World In Data showing the many vaccine innovations since 1880, in some cases technically eliminating diseases entirely, like polio and typhoid.

She is wearing a red and elaborate outfit with multiple layers and gold embroidery with gemstones. She is holding a scale in each of her hands, while the scales' chains wrap around her hands and forearms and go up towards the sky. Some of the chains are breaking, one of the scales is tipping down and gold liquid is running down.
