Every Wednesday (that I remember!), I will post a children’s book I’ve enjoyed. If you’ve read it too, or you want to share another book, join in! Gloam, by Jack Mackay, cover & illus by Ben Joel Price. Alt text for why I like it. #ukkidlit #kidlituk #middlegrade #spookyreads
A photograph showing my hand holding a copy of Gloam, by Jack Mackay, cover and illustrations by Ben Joel Price. The cover illustration shows a girl standing beneath a weeping willow; inside the willow’s branches are the title and a picture of a house in a rural landscape, a cat, a talisman stone with an eye painted on it, and a bony white hand.
Why I like it: I can’t read adult horror because I am too weedy, but middlegrade horror like this provides the ideal ladleful of scariness without grossness, menace rather than gory violence. Gloam certainly delivers in terms of creepy and there are times when I was reading frantically while also terrified of what was about to happen. The dynamics between the siblings is well observed, but what makes this book particularly special is the way that it has used horror to explore grief and fear in a way that feels very true and moving.
Ben Joel Price’s illustrations are so absolutely perfect: they both capture the creepiness of the story and bring their own uncanny and even horrifying atmosphere to it. An excellent pairing!

Cursed in the Lost City by Gabby Hutchinson Crouch and Malory Towers Mystery Club: Kidnap at Midnight by Fleur Hitchcock.
Cursed has a 'signed edition' sticker at the top right, and the cover art shows a dragon wrapped around a giant rock, which has a house on top of it. Various humanoid figures are also represented.
Kidnap at Midnight shows three girls in school uniforms in poses suggesting 'reading and note taking', 'thinking' and 'investigating'. They have a variety of hair and skin colours and look like they know what they're doing.
