Sonic has toed an interesting line here, taking big (and oftentimes only partially successful) swings with 3D entries like Sonic Frontiers and, less recently, the reviled Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) while never straying too far from its 2D roots by releasing smaller games like Sonic Mania. Sonic X Shadow Generations recently pulled all these threads together, including both 3D and 2.5D levels and functioning as both a remaster of one game (Sonic Generations) and the debut of what is unequivocally the best Sonic game of modern times (Shadow Generations).

The road to arrive at this point has been bumpy, but if we keep getting games as good as Shadow Generations out of the deal, I say let Sonic Team cook. However, Iizuka doesn’t plan to leave fans of the classics entirely in the lurch.
