It's not possible to separate one's views on modern Russia from one's views on the USSR because in many ways they are in fact indeed still the same thing. You cannot understand why Ukraine wants to leave their orbit if you cannot understand what they did to us.

By this logic, Jim Crow in the American South was no big deal, because in other parts of the US at the time, Black Americans could vote. I don’t think someone this well educated and intelligent really believes that.

starting to think that 'AI art' and 'art made with AI' will be very relevant distinctions tbh. stuff in the recognizable lazy AI house style will probably always be low status and derided because the creators will be people who don't give a shit. well made art with AI will simply be considered art.

i do unironically think people that are cosmopolitan need sorta paradoxically be more chauvinist about it tbh. places and people that are cosmopolitan in outlook are better than places that are provincially minded. the kind of performative handwringing about not being 'authentic' is bad and weak.

"But if I follow this logic to its conclusion, it would undermine ideas I hold as an article of faith!" Yes, and? That's how the world works. When you try to think carefully about something, it often surprises you. None of us have the privilege of having all our intuitions endlessly confirmed.

Scholars debate exactly how good conditions were for religious minorities in Islamic Al-Andalus, but everyone agrees it was better for Jews than Christian rule. It takes some chutzpah for a Catholic priest to go to Jerusalem and say this, given what happened to the Jews when Catholics took Spain.

much respect for Professor Tao, but there are so so so many medical therapies that work without anyone really understanding how or why they work one of the great things about science is that we can use empirical knowledge in practice far ahead of when theoretical frameworks catch up to refine it
Presentation slide titled “A thought experiment on alignment and understanding.” It describes a hypothetical AI-generated chemical cocktail that, when injected into a patient, kills all their cancer cells. The solution is confirmed by mathematical models, stage 3 clinical trials, and even “somehow” verified in Lean. The slide asks whether this solution could nevertheless be misaligned with broader goals, such as avoiding harmful long-term side effects. It then asks whether, before receiving the injection, you would want at least one human cancer expert to understand the cure’s mechanism, or a human mathematician to understand the mathematical model used to find the cocktail. “Misaligned” and both instances of “understands” are highlighted in red. The footer reads “Terence Tao” and “Math 2.0.”
