People on social media have built this whole narrative of Fetterman as this guy who is chomping at the bit to flip to Rs the second he can in order to fuck over Dems, but in actuality everything we've seen paints a picture of a miserable, mentally unwell man who absolutely fucking hates the job

We've lived for so long with this mythology that sure, the wealthy can be cruel. But at least the cruelty has a point. Profit! I'd like us to open our hearts to other possibilities. Power doesn't just corrupt! It can also breed truly reality-distorting levels of incompetence.

Remember that 21,000+ acre farm here in NC where workers keep dying? You'd think they're doing that "to make a profit." LOL no. If that were true, they probably wouldn't have gotten FORTY MILLION DOLLARS in arrears with their bank.

A lot of AI assistants seem to have been built around the assumption that the rest of the world is not actually real nymag.com/intelligence...
I wanted to hear about this weird new phenomenon from the other side. The Colorado plumber laughed and once again hung up the phone. The woman at the karaoke place was more patient but sounded confused:
Was I AI? Was I selling AI? Could she speak to a real person? No and no, I said, and yes: I was a cold-calling human being who wanted to hear about her experience getting cold-called by bots. (After failing to book a room with Muse, the customer dispatched another agentic solution for the job and claims to have gotten through.)
"Ah," she said. "Okay. We don't like AI calling our restaurant. We hate it." End of call. There is something to this - computers really do work differently now and can be asked to handle tasks that used to require a human touch (or at least a cursor). But in addition to expanding the boundaries of automation, the agent-assisted power users of today are also mowing down soft and unsuspecting targets - websites, interfaces, services, and people who haven't decided how, or if, they want to respond to the replacement of customers, clients, and even friends with agents - with the advantages that come with deploying them first. Once everyone has, as Mark Zuckerberg describes it, an "exceptionally capable personal agent," does anyone?

I, personally, would not go on the record with a reporter to announce I’m in favor of destroying the playground my kid is currently loving because I drive to work once a week (and the road still wouldn’t go there anyway), but everyone lives their lives differently I guess
Ryuka, 5, said he’d prefer to keep the park — and the playground — over a road during weekdays.
“Playground,” he said softly, avoiding meeting this reporter’s gaze. “I like the ship.”
Asked what would improve the park, which sits feet from Ocean Beach, he was decisive.
“More sand,” he said, burying his hands in the stuff.
Ads separate from the “no” campaign but featured on its Instagram page (opens in new tab) argue that car crashes in District 4 have declined since the Great Highway closed and that Sunset Dunes is the city’s third-most-popular park.
Ryuka’s mom, Denise Leo, 50, supports Prop. G because it would restore the road for weekend commutes. She drives Friday mornings for work as a library aide in San Mateo and wants the option of taking the Great Highway, rather than 19th Avenue. The pathway above the highway always worked when she wanted to go for a run, anyway. Or, wait, does she oppose G?
Told that a “no” vote keeps the road closed to cars, she paused. In 2024, she pointed out, it was the “no” vote that kept the highway open.
“I’m gonna vote to open it,” she said, looking at her son. “Even though he likes it.”

I'm taking my "Norway's wealth tax didn't reduce tax revenue" victory lap.
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021–2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an “exodus” of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times, 2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners’ firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners’ savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms. Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms, nor is there any evidence that the reform induced more bankruptcies. ...
