Day 9 of #31daysofgraves: Lettering. Stonecutting brothers Samuel and Sylvanus Tingley invented some of the most intricate fonts in early 19th c Providence, RI. This rather plain-looking slate for Charles Haskell, a Black Revolutionary War veteran, takes on new dimensions when you get verrrry close.

#31DaysofGraves Day 9: Lettering I've often seen a stonemason's name on a gravemarker. Not so often seen a note about the location of their business. "Henry Dunkley, Adjoining Cemy" - seen in Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington, London

#31DaysOfGraves Day 9: Lettering There is lots of lovely lettering on gravestones in Massachusetts, but when I think of lettering, I always think of Joseph Nash, a carver from the Connecticut River Valley. Nash did not carve conventional letterforms, but he never let that abbreviate his ambition.
dull sandstone gravestone covered with letters of inconsistent shape, height, and kerning, but LOTS of text.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 9 - Lettering: A very loopy style on the headstone commemorating Isobell Wobster, d.1752 at Brechin Cathedral. Wife of William Maule Gardiner at the Castle of Brechin and mother of 12 children! Described as having "unshaken patience".

#31daysofgraves Day 8: Animal. The horns, the Latin classification, and the initials say the deceased was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. The doglike snout and the disconcertingly human eyes say the carver had never seen an elk.
Closeup of a stone marked Hauer. Inside a circular recess, a bas relief of an elk head, its antlers curving around the circle. Above the head, the initials B. P. O. E. Below it, the caption Cervus Alces. But it has the wrong snout, and very wrong eyes: small, lidded, and forward facing like a human, not large and on the side of its head like a deer.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 8: Animal/Tier 📍Nienstedten Cemetery in Hamburg THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD/ DER HERR IST MEIN HIRTE. Artwork: Maren Lipp (1926 - 2015)

The photo shows a stone sculpture of a shepherd with a sheep. The figure is seated or kneeling in front of a neatly trimmed hedge and wears a cloak and head covering. With his left arm, he holds a sheep close.

The inscription on the base reads in large letters:

"THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD"

The inscription is an allusion to Psalm 23 ("The Lord is my shepherd"). Gravestones are visible in the background. The names and dates on the gravestones are partially visible, but are cropped out of the frame.

Day 7: Home This is one of my favourites, by an amazing local carver. Love the details of the hand especially. In Greenspond, Newfoundland and Labrador. #31DaysOfGraves
The gravestone of Stuart G Bragg who accidentally drowned in 1931. The top of the gravestone has an open book with the word home written on the left page and a hand with a quill. Underneath it is:

In loving memory
Of
Stuart G. Bragg
Accidentally drowned
May 30th. 1931
Aged 25 years.
Erected by his wife Minnie.

Lo where this silent marble weeps
Husband, son, and brother sleeps
A heart within whose sacred cell
The peaceful virtues loved to dwell

Just apart where no shadows fall
In perfect peace awaiting all,
Safe in the land that knows not pain
He is longing to meet us all again.

Today's #31daysofgraves theme is "home". This was a really hard one and the best I could do was this monument in #Hampstead cemetery, #London. The top plaque says that Walter Arthur Rider was "suddenly called home". He was only 19 when he died. The three metal plaques date between 1901 and 1925. 1/2
A tall memorial which although flat is built to look like the facade of a classical temple with two columns either side and a pediment. The central panel has three bronze plaques with inscriptions and one carved directly into the stone. Along the bottom on the stone in relief is the inscription "The family grave of Mr. & Mrs. W.R.Rider, of Hampstead".
