#31DaysOfGraves Day 2: Urn. Double memorial at Corby Glen, #Grantham, with an elegant classical urn carved above the inscriptions.
Dark grey gravestone with crisp cursive inscriptions to Thomas Brewster and his wife Mary who died within a few months of each other in 1846. The memorial stands in a grassy sunlit churchyard.

'Zahlen: Zwei' #FotoVorschlag #31DaysOfGraves Day 2 Urn Parkfriedhof Berlin Lichterfelde
A black and white photograph shows two identical stone urns sitting side by side inside a semi-circular stone niche. The niche is carved into a larger, weathered stone structure, possibly a monument or a grave marker. Behind the urns, the back of the alcove is decorated with an intricate relief carving of flowers and vines. Each urn has a rounded body, a defined neck, and a matching stone lid. There is faint, weathered text inscribed across the front surface of both urns

For #EpigraphyTuesday, my illustration of a 7th-century inscription found near Mérida’s Basilica of Santa Eulalia, which documents refurbishment of a monastery by a woman named Eugenia, the abbess (‘virgo virginum mater’). ☺️ One of my favorite examples of female patronage from Iberia.
Drawing of inscription, which is on a long (horizontally) rectangular piece of stone, containing six lines of Latin text, but beginning with a chi rho with an Alfa and Omega

Some things never change! A 2,000 year-old Roman souvenir pen with a joke inscription roughly equivalent to: “I went to Rome and all I got you was this cheap pen!" 😂 Dated to about 70 AD, this iron stylus pen was found in London during excavations by MOLA. 📷 MOLA #EpigraphyTuesday #Archaeology
The photo shows a Roman iron stylus pen used to write on wax-filled wooden writing tablets. It has an inscription which runs along its length on four sides. The image shows the four lines of inscribed text which read:

‘ab urbe v[e]n[i] munus tibi
gratum adf(e)ro
acul[eat]um ut habe[a]s memor[ia]m nostra(m)
rogo si fortuna dar[e]t quo possem
largius ut longa via ceu sacculus est (v)acuus’

‘I have come from the City. I bring you a welcome gift
with a sharp point that you may remember me.
I ask, if fortune allowed, that I might be able (to give)
as generously as the way is long (and) as my purse is empty.’

Funeral Invitation, 1688. Funeral invitations first appeared in the 17th century, and acted as an admission ticket to both the church and the funeral feast. Pallbearers were often assigned a number on the ticket to signify their position in carrying the coffin.
A funeral invitation from April, 1688. It has an ornate black border with various memento mori iconography around it - like skeletons, winged hourglasses, and scythes.

#31daysofgraves Day 23, cross. We have a few of the usual crosses in Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, so thought I would highlight this rather special one, made by monumental sculptor Peter Smith and designed by architect William Leiper.
Headstone which has a circular top containing a cross, with five bosses. Text on main body of the headstone is arts and craft style font, in my opinion!Close up image of cross with trinity knot in centre.
