Day 11 of #31daysofgraves: Humorous. This may not be humorous in the comical sense, but the cheeriness of this "Auf Wiedershen!" ("Farewell!" or "See you Soon!") makes me chuckle, especially in contrast to the gorgeous and ethereal Sphinxes on the monument. Alter Garnisonfriedhof, Berlin, Germany.

Day 9 of #31daysofgraves: Lettering. Stonecutting brothers Samuel and Sylvanus Tingley invented some of the most intricate fonts in early 19th c Providence, RI. This rather plain-looking slate for Charles Haskell, a Black Revolutionary War veteran, takes on new dimensions when you get verrrry close.

Day 8 of #31daysofgraves: Animal. I have a number of candidates in my files, but this one has always struck me as particularly unique. I believe it is a deer; I don't know the reason or context of this motif, but admire it every time I visit. Assistens Kirkegårde, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Day 7 of #31daysofgraves: Home. I love this row of mausoleums at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC. Visually and practically, they function as a "neighborhood."

Day 6 of #31daysofgraves: Weather. Grave of Lt. Nicholas Budures in Greenwood Cemetery, Atlanta, GA. Budures was part of a crew of 14 flying from Topeka, KS to Aurora, CO. Due to adverse weather conditions, the aircraft went out of control and crashed in a field. All men on board were killed.

Day 5 of #31daysofgraves: Vehicle. In mid-19th century Boston, wine merchant Samuel Reed owned the largest fleet of clipper ships in America. One of them is carved on his monument at Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston for posterity.

Day 4 of #31daysofgraves: Entrance. Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston, MA, c. 1880. Having been curator at this historic (and still active) cemetery, I will admit to a bias. But nothing was grander than American urban "rural" cemeteries of the 19th century!

Day 3 of #31daysofgraves: Glass. I don't know where this grave is; it may just be a design mockup, but glass is one of the more exciting recent developments in gravestone design. (Of course, being a medievalist at heart, nothing comes close to European stained glass of that and revival periods.)

#31DaysofGraves #2 Urn Weeping willows bend over a large and tiny urn for Mrs Loina Day and infant. She died on 20 January, 1813, aged 31 years, just 11 days after her child. www.jstor.org/stable/commu... #TheVictorianBookoftheDead
Brownish tombstone with a large and small arch on the top carved with urns overshadowed by weeping willows. The text reads: In Memory of Mrs. Loina Day, Consort of Mr. Joseph Day, who died Jan. 20th 1813, Aged 31 years.
Also
Her infant Child died Jan. 9 1813.
Great God I own thy sentence just
And nature must decay;
I yield her body to the dust [? the stone is very worn]
And wipe my weeping eyes. [? the grass hides some of the inscription.]

Regardless of whether it’s all talk, when the leader of our country expresses plainly genocidal intent, everyone has to do something. For citizens of all political stripes, it means rejecting this madness. For Congress, it means taking action to rein him in. Now.

‘The Angel of Grief’ was sculpted by artist William Wetmore Story for his wife Emelyn, whose death in 1894 devastated him to the point that this was the last sculpture he ever did. He died the following year of a broken heart. The Angel is in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome.
