There's something nakedly malevolent about targeting Stolpersteine. One of the most poignant memorial projects I've ever encountered, and so incredibly telling of the motivations and beliefs of a group that would see them all torn out to bury an uncomfortable past.

I've unlocked the Fortis in #Tyr and it's exactly as much fun as I'd hoped it would be, particularly now that I've outfitted it for maximum mobility. I just haven't quite figured out how to use its mines well yet.

Well, it's two years today since you left us, Xin. We love you, and we miss you. It feels strange to be getting older and growing up without you. I'm an uncle now, and damnit, I ought to be able to pester you with baby photos! We're doing alright. Wherever you are, I hope you are too.

A pair of Double-barred finches for today’s theme #Borbs

A concrete pedestal bird bath surrounded by Correa shrubbery and eucalypt mulch. There are a pair of tiny birds on the edge of the bath which have soft brown backs, black and white spotted wing feathers and distinctive white faces and bibs highlighted by narrow black lines and on breast and face. Their beaks are silver-grey and their eyes are black.

Temperate Rainforest Ecosystem featuring bryophytes (mosses) colonizing a mature vascular host tree (conifer) and its exposed root flares. The moss-covered root system provides a complex habitat (microniche) for soil microfauna, invertebrates, tardigrades & beneficial mycorrhizal. #ecology #nature

This image highlights a dynamic Temperate Rainforest Ecosystem featuring bryophytes (mosses) colonizing a mature vascular host tree (conifer) and its exposed root flares. Biological OverviewEpiphytic Moss Growth: The moss growing along the trunk and root bark functions as an epiphyte—a plant that grows on the surface of another plant for structural support rather than taking nutrients or water from the host tissue. Bryophyte Characteristics: Mosses are non-vascular plants (lacking true xylem and phloem) that absorb water and dissolved nutrients directly through their leaves via osmosis and atmospheric deposition. Host Tree Structural Adaptations: The prominent root flare at the base provides mechanical stability to anchor large trees in shallow, saturated forest soils.

An oil painting of a snake bard and plague doctor sitting at a table beside a large open window, through wich you can see the sky, a few houses behind a canal. In the lower left corner, at the feet of the bard there lays a border collie with it's head and ears perked up. Under the table, below the plague doctor is a curled up red panda. Which is like the paining above the doctor a reference to the painter.

A drawing of a creature with a body like a porcelain jar with legs, the body is covered in painted roses and there is a lid where the neck and head would be. The top drawing shows the lid closed, the second drawing shows the lid open with snakes sleeping inside

Tyr has been a surprisingly excellent game. Really scratches the arena shooter itch *and* the tank shooter itch at the same time, without being unpleasantly adrenaline filled as the former and without the community toxicity of the latter! Love what I've seen so far and am looking forward to more.

GDT's reddit AMA spitting fire www.reddit.com/r/movies/com...

reddit comment:

Hello! Did you intend the ending of Pan’s labyrinth to be real or in Ofelia’s mind?

Guillermo Del Toro's reply:

My interpretation, and it's exclusively mine, is that it's real.

Because there's two things. One is what people call “The Shining Question.” The Shining Question is, Who opens the door for Jack to get out of the fridge? And Ofelia is in an attic with a guard outside her door, and she draws the door with the magic chalk, and she shows up in the labyrinth. So, the only way she could have gone into the labyrinth is the magic chalk. And the flower is real at the end. The flower that blooms in the dead tree. And the reason I think it’s real is because—and this is why I'm in favor of the human factor in art—I think that art does transform the world. You know?

Think about it for a second. One of the goals, with all this movement, is to make you believe that art is vulgar. That art is nothing special, and anybody can do art. That is like me telling you that I'm faster at running than Usain Bolt but I “run” in my motorcycle. Well, that's not the same. That’s not the same at all.

Art is important, and they want you to believe it isn't. It's part of the idea of control. The goal is not to have artificial intelligence. The goal is to foster natural stupidity. The goal is to foster you not looking for answers, and to trust yourself entirely to an engine. Look at the way we are dipping our toes into these things. We are starting to ask the machine, Is this true? For now, there's a correlation between reality and what the answers of the machine are. For now. But soon, we won't even investigate further. We will be told it's true. And if the machine is in the hands of somebody who should not be trusted, then your reality has been completely and utterly fucked. Because your intelligence ends at the question. You don't seek the answer. It's given to you.

Q: You recently mentioned that AI creates 'semi-compelling screensavers' and that you'd 'rather die' than use it. As a filmmaker who relies heavily on practical effects and creature design, what do you think is the biggest thing lost when a computer generates an image instead of a human hand?

GDT:

The three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don't think about without that process. Meaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there's a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%. I'll give you an example with the Pale Man.

We sculpted it as an old man, with a face. And then I said, Let's take out the face. This happened because I saw a photo of a manta ray and the poster for Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. That combination, which happened at two different times during a week or a month, are not permutations that are chemically part of an equation. They are alchemy. And then I said, Take out the face, and then I said, Let's put the eyes on the hands. This triangulation happens because I spent a month or two months living with the idea of this creature. And it's not linear.

AI is like a super-fast engine that makes semi-sentient permutations of things that are already done. Creation is things that have never been done. Coming to exist.

And the second thing is the loss of the apprenticeship that one has as an artist. You're never a master; you're always an apprentice. This is a kinship I have with, for example, Chris Nolan. When he showed me The Odyssey, there’s a scene when Matt Damon is floating in the stormy ocean and I asked him—because we were talking about practical effects, and how great it is and that we both always use a maquette or a model—and I asked him, How did you do it? He said, “We put him in a storm in the ocean.”

And you're gonna find that 30% of a great image occurs accidentally. You know, either a drop of water hits the lens, or the camera shakes. I remember when in 1993, '94, Jim…

A few places on this beautiful planet that made me feel (and look) small.

A selfie of me standing on the edge of a tall, rugged red rock cliff overlooking a vast canyon landscape and the Green River some 1,300 ft below, all under a soft, cloudy, golden sky.

The House group of sequoia trees with 6'3" me standing right in front of them for scale as they tower over me out of the frame.

A distant selfie of me standing in nearly waist deep water of the middle of the Rio Grande River with massive canyon walls on either side and clear blue sky overhead.

A photo of me standing near the base of the powerful Skogafoss waterfall in Iceland. I am center frame, wearing a gray and orange jacket, and standing on light-colored rocks. I am dwarfed by the entire frame filled with white water plunging down the falls.

A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.
