Love to refuse a prompt. static1.squarespace.com/static/53a4b...
REFLECTIONS ON AI IN THE CLASSROOM:
How We are Not Using Al in the Classroom
By Sonja Drimmer & Christopher J. Nygren
Premise
Prompt engineering is a term that has become commonplace since the widespread availability of generative Al applications like ChatGPT. The idea is that the outputs of the large language models (LLMs) on which these applications are based are only as good as the prompts that are input: vague prompts result in equally vague outputs. And thus was born the race to train for careers in prompt engineering. Unfortunately, the bubble seems to have burst before even the first generation of students was trained for this career outcome.
We were given a prompt as an invitation to participate in this newsletter: "How are you using Al in the classroom?" While we have accepted this invitation, we are engaging in the most humanistic act we can imagine—refusing the prompt.”

"The trick is not to die while dreaming of death." Stunning poem "Reading Emily Dickinson in Amherst Massachusetts" by David Keplinger in @poetrysociety.org ❤️ #poetrycommunity #poetry
Reading Emily Dickinson in Amherst Massachusetts

By David Keplinger

I know how it feels to live in a small leaden room,

with only snakes and birds as consolation. I know how

to imagine death by falling through storeys

of floorboards like a poem flutters through molecules, air

and time. It never lands in the yard. The trick

is not to die while dreaming of death. That’s why

the circle of doors and windows here remain open

a little. That’s why the poems seem always to end

on slant rhymes, and dashes. That’s why the hawthorn cone

is never quite in full bloom but almost. I too come here

respectfully. I bow, halfway at thresholds. I know how to wait

at a completely empty window, holding out my hands.

So extremely grateful to @jasonbcrawford.bsky.social for including my poem "This Ars Poetica Is Not About “Hey Jupiter” (But Then Again, Knowing Me, It Probably Is)" in Poet Lore's Ekphrastic Poems Folio, with so many other wonderful poets! Including friend @rosebudbenoni.bsky.social!
This Ars Poetica Is Not About “Hey Jupiter” (But Then Again, Knowing Me, It Probably Is)

What is poetry?

Jupiter is the largest planet in the Milky Way. The stormy surface is composed of gasses held together in a sphere by the gravitational hold of the denser interior gasses. But at it’s birth, it is believed that Jupiter had a solid center, which was destroyed by its immense gravitational pressure and comet strikes. It is theorized that Jupiter’s birth core may remain, hidden beneath the gas giant’s stormy atmosphere. This theoretical core remains invisible to science.

Describe your early influences.

I’m 15 years old and I write “O Venus” at the top of the first page of a new notebook and I don’t write another word for two years.

Is it love or poetry?

I used to start fires in my parents’ attic. Crisp leaves curling as they turn black. The aftersmoke of the matches sizzling in my nose. My brother in the basement listening to Nine Inch Nails.

If you were not a poet, what would you be?

Smoke.

Why?

Because I could be invisible.

Why?

All my worst memories are filled with the smell of a drunk man next to me in bed.

What is poetry?

On Jupiter, the sun goes into retrograde.

Are you blue?

In the brain, scents attach to the olfactory bulb, which is directly connected to the amygdala and hippocampus, which is why smells often lead to remembering specific details and emotions from past memories.
Is it love or poetry?

My wife asks about my childhood and I tell her about campfires, sparks dancing with the stars, a walking stick stuck in the fire, the tip brittle and ashen. I tell her about the thurible, the pile of matches in the rectory use to light it, the sharp incense filling the room and my body.

Is it love or is it poetry?

I can burn anything. Matches. Leaves. My own hair. Have you ever lit a tire on fire and just watched it swell with smoke?

Why?

All my favorite memories are filled with the smell of fire.

Is it love or poetry?

Widely studied, spontaneous combustion commonly occurs in hay and compost piles, due to the heat created during bacterial fermentation. Though there have been reports dating as far back as the Victorian Period, there has never been a confirmed case of spontaneous human combustion.

Describe your early influences.

The film strip in fourth grade explaining “Duck and Cover.” The mushroom cloud, the air bending at the knee to the atom, the children scrambling beneath their desks. We didn’t see the school explode. We didn’t see the desks. We didn’t see.

What is poetry?

Jupiter’s gravitational pull slings comets into the outer reaches of the Milky Way. Except, in the year 1770, the Comet Lexell passed into Jupiter’s orbit, swung around the gas giant, and was hurled towards the Earth, missing us by barely a million miles.

Are you blue?

I miss the sun on my back.

Is it love or poetry?

I burn my arm hairs every time I use the grill.

Describe your earliest influences?

In the fifth grade, I learned my body was made of more air than atoms.
What is poetry?

Jupiter’s eye is hypercane that is believed to have existed for at least 360 years. It’s upper atmosphere is warmed by acoustic waves crashing up from the center of the storm. When they break, the sound is so loud that it creates heat.

Describe your early influences.

For months, I misheard the words “little masochist” as “little massive fist.”

What is poetry?

Hydrogen is highly combustible. However, because Jupiter lacks oxygen, itm is impossible for the high rates of hydrogen on Jupiter to ignite. Sometimes, satellite and probe images make it seem like Jupiter is on fire, but this is just infrared radiation leaking through Jupiter’s cloud tops.

Describe your earliest influences.

There’s a reoccurring dream: I’m running through a crowded mall, hands clutching at my legs, fingers fishing between my legs, and I stop, smoke swimming beneath my clothes.

If you were not a poet, what would you be?

Compost.

Why?

Because the gravitational pull of my body is filled with men with their hands over my mouth.

If you were not a poet, what would you be?

Invisible.

Why?

Because my paper thin limbs are filled with nerves and sinew and atoms.

If you were not a poet, what would you be?

Jupiter’s eye.

Why?

Because even an arsonist needs a safe confessor.
