Happy September, poets! While I queue up some Green Day (I promise you, it's not *that song*)... Where y'all submitting to this month?

I'm a little hesitant to push this since I already have more than 400 submissions to read... No, scratch that. Send those poems in! Let's hit 500! Or even better - 600!

As the smoke lifts, we stole a few hours to do some cleanup in the garden and I found that this sunflower lived through some traume early on, a deep bend & probable break at the base of the stem, but she survived. & now she's a giant. & flowering. & I love her. Also, zinnias, cuz they're my faves 😍

On Silence
“In music, silence is more important than sound.”
—Miles Davis

Let me tell you something true: when I was thirteen, a man put
his hand over my mouth and I lost my voice

for a decade. Is it grief or grievance that brings me here, to stare into
this hole dug with daggers and tongues? All those tiny

red devils from my dog-eared copy of Steven Crane,
but they never settled in my heart. My throat taught me what home means

before you came along. And now, all these mercies I’ve caught
in this fertile cathedral: the Rose of Sharon in full bloom,

the bumblebees squeezing themselves around the stamens, the ferns
light against the chain link fence, the Japanese beetles

"I’ve been many a man’s Bible, been unbelievable." - Rane Arroyo (11/15/1954 - 5/7/2010) Sixteen years after you left, how do you still teach me, old friend?
Big boys don’t cry
by Rane Arroyo

-after Fergie

My future man doesn’t do clubs, doesn’t sweat
his way to amen, doesn’t get what’s the big deal
about being invited to be in the calendar, Heaven’s
Hunks. He listens to my music in the cryptic car
he bought to take me to the country to prove how
many plants I can’t name. He loves that I make
up Red Pirate’s Goatee, Moonboots, Wind’s Lover.
I’ve been many a man’s Bible, been unbelievable.
He leaves, and I’m relieved that I’ve the talent not
to ask for anything. How terrible to learn that in this
world that I lack the talent of betrayal. Friends have
died, and exhaustion doesn’t get anyone a medal.
We’re a nation of men trying not to cry. My future
will be defined by a man, yes him, and I don’t care
if that’s wrong. He will trust me because of my flaws.

Hi hi hi! I have a new poem, "What If? Tony" in the new issue of Indianapolis Review! Inspired by What If? Magik by Leah Williams and Filipe Andrade. Thanks so much to Natalie Solmer for including me! TW: Child sexual abuse Read the whole poem here: theindianapolisreview.com/what-if-tony/
What If? Tony

–after “What If? Magik” by Leah Williams and Filipe Andrade

If every action makes a new universe. If every step can
conjur thirteen new worlds. If my body had been too big

to fit in the locker, my muscles just a little bit larger,
my fingers comfortable as fists. If my eyesight hadn’t

started to slip at age six. If I hadn’t wanted to sleep over,
me and his son listening to “Weird” Al and falling asleep

watching Friday the 13th as fireworks burst behind us.
If I’d been born with an aptitude for anything other

than the words I wouldn’t use. How often I was praised
for being quiet. If my hair grew long enough to hide

my thoughts. If I hadn’t doubted if his son really had
the limited variant cover of “The Death of Superman.”

If I didn’t hear him when he said, Good boy, if I didn’t
want so badly to be good. If I could have learnedWhat If? Magik by Leah Williams and Filipe Andrade Magik falling

Text: Little did he know, he was only planting a seed.
Magik and Dr. Strange in the aftermath.

Magik: What... What now?

Strange: Lunch, I believe.

Today on Glass! "Swim" by Derek N. Otsuji! www.glass-poetry.com/journal.html
Derek N. Otsuji

Swim

I slip under —
pulled by the amniotic tug of memory
                    — the arms remember that they were oars, legs
fuse into a fluke, webbing flares between
digits of the hand. Sunlight on the body’s
smooth vessel, rippling — I descend the shaft
of time, and from the glass elevator
step out into dream. The breath encapsulates
a shimmering wish, vanishes on contact
with the upper air. I am a blue-lipped fish
                    moving down corridors dissolving into
                              transparency where all pathways
— in all
          directions now open before me
                    — as if everything were still possible,
                              the imagined other life, suspended.

Found Poem Built of Endings

I arrive at your mixed messaging scribbled in the upper left-hand corner of the margin: Everyone is feeling down & everyone is feeling better. On top of that, the use of an underline for emphasis. Because (I can only guess): guns. Because a few more hours. Because a confiscated book. Because in September, the surveilled field will arrive as a mirror reflecting the months that were most uncomfortable. Even here, the stark definition of a boy apocalypse. Stolid body, rattled heart: a gas molecule simulating a solid, that in your orange jumpsuit you appear just fine, though not as believably as the hummingbird that lent its heart to the failing engine of a car. Remind me, is it the freedom of monotony or the monotony of freedom? In merely waiting? In merely attempting to convince another of an idea also unknown to me? In humbly confessing, I could have sworn something else was going to happen today — I guess I was wrong.

This poem is part of a larger series of response poems to the journal entries my brother penned while serving 90 days in county jail during the summer of 2020 for addiction-related offenses. More specifically, my brother kept a daily journal with the intent that I would write an accompanying poem for each entry. Though the world told him otherwise, he believed his voice mattered, and we hoped to publish our work together. Eight days after being released, he passed away from a drug overdose, which means our project and his "text" have since taken on new meaning. He often said jail was one ending after another after another, that no activity was given the dignity of completion: sleeping, reading a book, a game of cards, using the tablet. This poem speaks to that characterization, as well as my brother's fear that eventually he'd grow immune to such treatment. The italicized text is excerpted from his journal entry dated 8/29/20.

Look, I know everything is terrible and the world is a dumpster fire and many of us are terrified of whatever hellscape notification is going to pop up next, so I think it's important to take a second and remember that, when he was a young man, Sir David Attenborough was a 100% certifiable hottie.

Happiest of holidays, everyone 💛
Christmas Poem

The part I'm most interested in is the part
where he's also 100% human, the part where
he's a budding baby reaching for his mother's milk,
where he sees the world around him but isn't
sure how big it is. I imagine him learning to talk,
his tongue testing its limits, his mind tasting
each syllable as they stretch through his throat.
And that first wobbly step, did he smile, did he
shine with pride like the clouds in all those paintings?
I forget, sometimes, that he was a boy, chasing snakes
or digging holes in the sand, playing desert games
with the other desert boys. I like him that way,
human, flesh and bone and muscle, a scrapped knee,
a wondering eye as it watches the birds soaring through
the sky. I know there's more to him than me, but even
if he's all you say, I'm not sure that's the best part.
The best part is the idea that god could have a little bit
of me in him, that even god's voice, once in a while,
might crack in the middle of a song. I like that like
I like the man looking up, looking beyond the clouds,
beyond even the stars. I can believe in the man who
looked at the sky and, like me, sighed with longing.
