New article just dropped in APSR! Leah Downey and yours truly on why people should stop using “democratize” when all they really mean is increasing market access. (Looking at you, economists! 👀) And, more positively, what a better vision of “democratization” looks like when applied to finance.

Average CEO age at appointment has risen sharply over recent decades. Rising uncertainty & economic complexity increase demand for generalist human capital, prompting firms to prioritise accumulated experience. @vkecht.bsky.social, A Lizzeri, @farzado.bsky.social cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
The plot shows the average age of CEOs over time, separately for sitting CEOs and CEOs at appointment. The sample includes 50,510 CEOs in the United States.

The composition of Western workforces has shifted toward older workers, and this trend is particularly strong at the very top of business organisations. This column uses newly assembled data spanning a wide range of firms to document that average CEO age at appointment has risen sharply over recent decades. This increase is concentrated outside of large, listed firms and driven by longer, more diverse career paths prior to appointment. Demographics, schooling, and tenure cannot explain these patterns. Instead, rising uncertainty and economic complexity have increased demand for generalist human capital, prompting firms to prioritise accumulated experience over innate ability and incentivising prospective CEOs to broaden their skill portfolios in response.

I will be sending this email a lot this year. Feel free to tell me it's problematic, but I've had it with students who don't show up and expect me to be in their corner.
I’m sorry that I cannot provide my recommendation. This is not due to your module grade, but the fact that we had very limited personal interaction.

As you know, students now make extensive use of AI tools, which can make it difficult to assess the extent to which written work reflects their own independent reasoning. Meeting regularly and discussing ideas in depth is usually the only reliable way for me to understand a student’s qualities and potential.

For these reasons, I generally reserve my references for students with whom I have had repeated and sustained engagement over time, as this is the only basis on which I can provide a well-rounded and meaningful assessment.

My door is always open for office hours and I encourage all students to come but few make use of it. In your case, I simply do not have enough direct insight into your work to write a reference that would be fair or helpful to you.

I wish you all the very best with your applications.

Graph showing a strong negative correlation between GDP per capita and unequal gender role norms.

While economists have extensively studied gender norms affecting women, masculinity norms – the informal rules that guide and constrain the behaviours of boys and men – remain underexplored. This column reviews how such norms can shape economic outcomes in labour markets, health, education, households, and politics. Drawing on new survey data from 87,000 individuals across 70 countries, the authors show that adherence to masculinity norms strongly predicts men's labour supply, risk-taking, health behaviours, and support for authoritarian leadership.

Our explanation: they are generalists, and that skill set is in high demand given high industry uncertainty. Generalists are good at curbing volatility, but tend to be old unless they come from a consulting background. Consultant CEOs‘ young age may thus be a contributing factor to firm growth.
