I mean, the real reason they don't just come right out and say The Thing is coz centrists are fine with them as long as they're just using quaint little terms, it gives the centre more time to bash the left for being blunt. The centre only actually hates the right when it's being RUDE.

And the wages will be lower, which increases the chance people work multiple jobs, which again decreases the number of jobs. It's all so depressingly easy to predict but just remembering what happened last time.

They banged out one Tomb Raider game a year for 8 years. Don't tell me it can't be done

Like, they already remastered the originals, they have all the assets and code. How long would it really take to bang out a new game in that style, given the measured demand?

And a game they *already* remade in 2007, with a new title that gives away a mid-game reveal.

So, going to be very blunt: this entire line of thinking is deeply imperial core. THIS is the hegemonic, nationalist feminism. It's the perspective of a citizen of empire who was taught to see the suffering of the enforcers and soldiers before the suffering of their victims, of the colonized.
Yes, acknowledging the violence of men is imperative. Men have committed atrocities. Men have done unspeakable things. Men have hurt us.

But this acknowledgment is of limited use if we cannot also acknowledge that this violence has hurt the men who’ve enacted it. Men have created violence at their own expense. As difficult as it may be to face, the reality is that no man truly benefits from this system of patriarchal domination, either. All violence is senseless. The moment you murder someone else in order to eat, you’ve both lost. There is no winner. Ça n’existe pas.

How they didn't see this coming is beyond me. when AI dudes see something they like made with AI, they don't ask to buy it, they ask "what was the prompt you used?" so they can make it themselves. It has "I don't want to pay for that" baked in to the culture of consumers.

It's the sad realization that 'Tomb Raider' just doesn't mean the same thing to people who played the "survivor" series as it does to me who played the originals. Is there no space for a 3D platforming puzzle game anymore? Where can I get that!

You'll notice the only way this argument works is if they anonymise that man who died. A man whose occupation (and I mean this literally) killed people and forced lives of indignity on those lucky enough to survive. If it was terrorism, who was terrorized? Not me and not your average American.

I get it, but the guy is approaching 70. I don't know how physically demanding that role is (it's not like he has magic powers, he has to buy physically imposing). If I was Marvel I would be thinking about recasting that role in the next couple of years.

I think one reason data center outrage is so pronounced is people spent decades recycling and composting and otherwise scrimping to offset energy use and protect clean water, and the second we hit an inflection point for cheap electricity the banking industry said we’re taking all of it, fuck you

Really crazy to learn that JK Rowling once worked at Amnesty International as a bilingual researcher but she was fired because she was too busy writing books during work hours instead of documenting war crimes in French speaking Africa.
A screenshot of an article snippet featuring a photograph of J.K. Rowling credited to Twocoms / Shutterstock.com. Below the photo, a heading reads "J.K. Rowling" followed by "Net worth: $1 billion." Two paragraphs of text follow: "Before she was a best-selling author, 'Harry Potter' creator J.K. Rowling lost her job as a secretary for the London office of Amnesty International because she was caught writing creative stories on her computer while on the clock. She used her severance to begin Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Today, Rowling is a billionaire, thanks to the book series that has sold over 500 million copies and a blockbuster film franchise."

Well, no not really at all. But it was at least "originally intended" to be cool and good. But it has demonstrably been hijacked, by people or by simply a chain of incentives, or both, the result is the same.

The intention is still there and the outcome is the same, the only difference is timing
000
ExPursuedByBear @expursuedbybear.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
I agree that designing the system from the ground up for that intention is unlikely, but it's much more likely that in 2018 some people looked at the media/political ecosystem of the US & thought "here's how we can game it" in order to keep the wheels turning a little longer during multiple crises
300
ExPursuedByBear @expursuedbybear.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
But arguing the point doesn't gain us anything and the outcomes are still the same no matter who gets declared right in the end. People end up poorer, with less rights, and facing a climate catastrophe. Is "how did we get here?" as important as "how do we get out?"
100
ExPursuedByBear @expursuedbybear.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
Only by American standards is that the case. Both parties would be considered right wing if they existed in the UKs political ecosystem. Surely you have noticed the change in message from "we can make things better" to "we might be able to stop things getting as bad as we fear they're going to be"
100
ExPursuedByBear @expursuedbybear.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
Okay see the thing I am talking about is a very specific thing in a very specific comment. So, you see my confusion when, from my point of view, it is referred to as a lie.
000
ExPursuedByBear @expursuedbybear.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
If the argument is whether this is "indented" functionality by those who originally designed the system, then it really is dumb point to argue about because, whether or not it was originally intended, it *is* currently intended.
110
ExPursuedByBear @expursuedbybear.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
I'm confused as to what the lie is, exactly. Like, American media consistently refers to the Democratic Party as "the left" (we may disagree, but they are the louder voices in the room) when they're clearly centre right to and the effect of this is to make a right wing perspective appear moderate.
200
ExPursuedByBear @expursuedbybear.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
We can argue phrasing, or we can engage with the reality of how it is employed today. Focusing on a very small part of what someone said and criticizing the way it was phrased allows you to disengage with the actual point they were making. The system is functioning as designed, the design is evil.
200
ExPursuedByBear @expursuedbybear.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
And this is how we all get bogged down in arguing semantics, rather than discussing the very obvious problems. So much time is wasted on here.

ExPursuedByBear @expursuedbybear.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
I would also disagree that your *current* political system is 200 years old. The system that currently shapes the US is Trump/Fox-based and really only evolved during the Obama administration. Just because everything has the same name doesn't mean it hasn't been bent beyond recognition
000
ExPursuedByBear @expursuedbybear.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
you're taking a very narrow definition. There is a world of difference between a shadowy conspiracy and a chain of financial/political incentives across a broad number of industries, but the outcome is ultimately the same. You're criticizing people for being caught out by the character limit.
