One of the great hypocrisies (among many) of death penalty supporters is that their political creed is fundamentally based on the government being completely incompetent to manage anything except 100% accuracy in death penalty cases.

When I lived in the UK none of my concerns e.g. affordable housing, climate action, increases in welfare spending, scrapping tuition fees, an ethical foreign policy, were ever framed as legitimate concerns. lnstead I was routinely told to fuck off by most political parties for having such concerns.

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Also, creating a hurdle that needs to be cleared to access a lot of roads to success in later life, and subjecting kids to it at a point where their brains, bodies, and social relationships are in the greatest state of flux, is capricious and cruel.

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION
WILL DIE TONIGHT
My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
"we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.

The astronomical debt from student loans puts kids from lower income group families off going to university and discourages others from studying courses that won't offer "a return." That was obvious from the start and it's also turned some university courses into little more than finishing schools

The thing that really boils my potatoes about Al in general is that I have been a creative professional for over a decade now and the devil has ALWAYS been in the details. Big and small, I've had single-person businesses rip me to shreds over how their colors turned out on newsprint, and have worked with huge companies with THICK brand guidelines with every detail of their brand identity laid out and enforced with an iron fist.

But I guess all of that stuff doesn't matter anymore? Who gives a fuck if this Al generated baby has six fingers, that mom-and-pop shop is still going to use it. That rug from Temu says Happy Thanksgivirg? Oh well haha it's just a silly funny thing now (nevermind that you never would have given a B-grade item from a craft show the same consideration). I don't actually care that the Al Coca-cola ad has a truck that changes size every scene, but I can't help but think about how, if it had been some poor underpaid artist, they would have been laughed out of the building.

I don't really know how to put it in a succint way but it just feels all the more obvious how much more grace and flexibility has always been possible but never offered.

#36: Breakfast
A screenshot of the headline to a Guardian column by Adrian Chiles. The headline reads" 'London has plenty of posh breakfast options- but give me a greasy spoon any day.'My invitation went to Peter, Ian, Dinah and James. Food critics all, accustomed to only the finest restaurants in the capital, their words—as they had many times demonstrated—able to make a business, or kill it stone dead. An exclusive launch at dawn of the finest breakfast establishment in Soho, Temptations Cafe. Their faces, when they found not the soft furnishings and genteel ambience to which they were accustomed, but the formica tables and wipe-clean menus of a traditional greasy spoon, were a picture.
They didn’t recognise me, their host, at first. Why should they? It was only when I outlined my mission of revenge, when I had explained to them that I had not only arranged for their deaths, but could tell them exactly how they would die, that they began to realise who I was.
I began with Peter. He would leave from this place, take the train back to Berkshire. The only sandwich left in the buffet car, ox tongue and mustard, would sicken him, cause him to lean out of the window and be decapitated by a passing express.
Ian would go home, critique his long-suffering wife’s preparation of their gourmet supper for the thousandth—and last—time and end up diced and braised as part of the entrée for their invited guests that evening.
Dinah would attempt to steal a taste of a forbidden dish, prepared by the world’s greatest chef for a singular wealthy client only, and in the process find herself trapped in a walk-in freezer, her corpse later discovered with her tongue frozen solid to the plate.
Finally, James, while escaping the jealous owner of a Turkish restaurant, with whose wife he had been having an affair, would leap from a first floor window and find himself skewered, tail to top, on the railing beneath.
They scoffed at me, called me a madman, told me my stories were pure fantasy. But when they went to leave the greasy spoon, the door wouldn’t open, and they realised, too late, that the red light outside was not the coming dawn, but the burning of hellfire.

The main attraction of the UK to asylum seekers is that if they have a second language is quite likely to be English, and because they often have existing diasporic family/friend connections there. These are actually *advantages* the UK possesses as a a desirable place if it could only see that.

If you require migrants to meet higher standards than the average Brit, whether that is in terms their language requirements, voluntary service, which isn't remotely "voluntary" if it is compulsory, or anything else then you have a system which is by definition discriminatory. One which dehumanises.
