The BBC is already giving Nigel Farage coverage for a speech he hasn’t even delivered. Report on what he says tomorrow, by all means. But previewing it now gives him free publicity and lets him set the agenda before anyone can scrutinise his words.

This Roman perfume bottle shaped like a bird is 2,000 years old, yet it looks like a modern design! 📷 Corning Museum of Glass glasscollection.cmog.org/objects/7194... #Archaeology
This photo by the Corning Museum of Glass shows a Roman perfume container made of transparent light blue glass in the shape of a bird. Seen in profile facing right, it has a long narrow beak inclined upwards. The head and neck are represented by single tubular element which merges with a plump, stylised body with a long, horizontal, tapering tail. Size: H 6 cm, L 11.7 cm. It is displayed against a grey background.

According to the museum, this bottle and others like it often contain powdered remnants of perfume. Glassmakers created the graceful bird shape by manipulating a glass bubble at the furnace. The bottle was filled with perfume and sealed over the fire. To use the perfume, its owner would crack the bird’s tail and reseal it after each use.

Perspective view of a young woman reading a letter c. 1670, by Samuel Dirksz van Hoogstraten, Dutch Baroque artist, pupil of Rembrandt, born #OTD 1627. He was known for experimental perspective views of interiors, with light & shadow defining architectural space and mood. ALT Mauritshuis, den Haag
A fashionable silk-gowned young woman reads a letter in an affluent Italianate entrance hall, while her King Charles spaniel protectively bars the spectator from entering. The space is defined by steps leading to a garden portico, with classical columns and statues on plinths, with access to a tree-lined path and a glimpse of a town house. The more private space behind her is revealed by a wrought-iron stair leading to a windowed room, with suggestion of a town house view.
