Amazon isn’t entirely wrong.
Product preferences - maintains steady book acquisition rate
Departments - cat care
Home & family - has a cat

BTW this means no funding for GSS, ANES, or PSID. GSS 2026 is in the field now, but then it looks like that's it. Devastating for social science.

(Also, on a practical level... a lot of things that make life measurably better rely on local volunteers committing their time. Be nice if we could facilitate more of that. Four-day work week and UBI, anyone?)

I remember walking into class the day we read Bartleby the Scrivener, and my prof said “this is why you’re paying 40 grand for a liberal arts degree. One day you’ll go to a party and someone will say ‘I would prefer not to’ and the people who chuckle are the ones you can probably talk to”.

The accounting is in: In Oregon there are 111 data centers. The TOTAL number of people employed at data centers is just 2,630, or 0.1% of the labor force. Those 100 data centers consumer 23% of all electricity used in Oregon. Meanwhile, electricity rates skyrocket as more centers are built.

Despite being “the third-most populous community in Maryland,” Germantown is not a city but “an urbanized census-designated place” (yes, I’m quoting Wikipedia). It’s a bunch of HOAs in a trenchcoat. And our best piece of architecture is this.
Photo of the Cider Barrel, a now closed cider stand. The window where you bought cider is in a literal oversized cider barrel, maybe 20 feet high. It is painted red, white, and blue.

AI question: Salesforce has foisted “agentforce coworker” on us. Now every time I search*, it does an AI search as well. It’s at the top of the page and ludicrously slow - it doesn’t even load by the time I find what I need. So, is it actually running a query and using those resources? Or faking it?
