A Dark winged digger wasp (Lestiphorus bicinctus) spotted in my garden this afternoon. Although this solitary wasp's flight period is from June to October all my Falmouth records have been in August, the previous two in 2019 and 2016. #wasp #wasps

Robber fly spotted in Falmouth's Victorian cemetery on Sunday, these are ambush predators Their name stems from their ability to hunt by snatching other insects in mid-air. I am thinking this one is possibly Dioctria baumhaueri, any help with id appreciated. @suillia.bsky.social

Finally found my first nudibranch yesterday after 7 years of abject failure in the rock pools of Falmouth. This Orange-clubbed Sea Slug (Limacia clavigera) was hiding beneath some kelp. With @leelachanner.bsky.social
A white slug with numerous tendrils ending yellow and orange clubs sits on a brown bit of kelp which dwarfs the tiny slug.

Superb Ant-hill Hoverfly (Xanthogramma pedissequum). This female was exploring the undergrowth in my garden probably looking for suitable places to lay her eggs. We don't know the exact life of her larvae but they have been found living in Ant's nests.

100 days since the Govt was forced to release its National Security Assessment which said that ecosystem collapse is a threat to national security. Parliament has still not been allowed to scrutinise its findings. We must have a Parliamentary debate.

There's been a very noticeable arrival of migrant butterflies to Cornwall this last week. I counted six Painted Ladies and four Red Admirals on a short walk through the lanes near Helston this afternoon.

I found the first Clouded Yellow caterpillars of 2026 today on the transect. Only 2 seen, but clear evidence that they continue to overwinter at Southbourne despite what the British winter weather is throwing at them. Southbourne Dorset

40 grassland sites across St Albans district have been seeded with wildflowers and mowed only once in late summer as part of the Wilder St Albans project. The results? Sightings of butterflies during site visits were up by an average of 80% on 2024 and 350% on 2022. 🦋
