WIC benefits have notoriously low take-up for some groups. Our new study in Health Affairs led by @emilydore.bsky.social found that allowing benefits to be issued remotely during pandemic boosted take-up. www.healthaffairs.org/doi/10.1377/... @capolicylab.bsky.social @oppforhealthlab.bsky.social

Many states distributed benefits remotely during the pandemic, but there are bills in the House (H.R. 1464) and Senate (S.3842) that would make remote benefits permanent. Our research suggests that if made into law, WIC would experience increases in participation *among those already eligible*.

Our new article shows that states increased participation in WIC by offering benefits remotely. Given WIC's health benefits but low participation rates, this is one way states might improve maternal and child health. www.healthaffairs.org/doi/10.1377/... @ritahamad.bsky.social @pamherd.bsky.social

The need to return to work shouldn't limit parents' choices in how they feed their newborn. These changes to #TANF show it's possible to support parents at their most vulnerable, and that increasing access to these programs must be considered to improve #healthequity.

While most people want to breastfeed, they face barriers like having to return to work right after birth. Providing cash to families, especially without imposing #workrequirements, allows for more parents to stay home with their newborn.
