Children are people. When you have a kid, you make a person, and that person is not going to follow a script. If you think your kid is one thing and they're actually another, your job as a parent is to support them and set them up for success, not punish them for wanting different pronouns.

Great night with @elizachanwrites.bsky.social in Glasgow Waterstones this evening and pub after. She was talking about her new novel, Harbour of Hungry Ghosts - inspired by Hong Kong martial arts films and Buffy.

Themed cocktails and nibbles on hand, I revealed to my mum that the book is dedicated to her and then looked far far too gleeful wielding a huge knife to cut the cake. Books were signed, swag was distributed and many smiles were had.

We had a themed playlist, a talisman guestbook, homemade good luck knot charms, hopping vampire mini figs, a DIY photo booth and much much more! Many people came dressed up which was lovely and the effort much appreciated in the humid heat!

On Tuesday I had my launch party at Hello Oriental to celebrate HARBOUR OF HUNGRY GHOSTS. It was an absolutely wonderful evening. As is now tradition, I commissioned THE best cake from Classic Cakes complete with hand painted porcelain style blue and white art and a coin sword on top!

i just read:
Harbour of Hungry Ghosts
my arc review, expect:
- British-occupied Hong Kong
- Chinese + British magical realism
- star-crossed lovers: Chinese exorcist + pious Englishman
- family full of secrets
- grandma stuck in an underworld rift
- for fans of Girl with a Thousand Faces

my thoughts: 4 stars
Kiamling is an exorcist trying to get out from under her grandmother's thumb. That is, until her grandmother is taken into an underworld rift and she must save her.
Post Treaty of Nanking, this story weaves Chinese and British mythology to create a world where geopolitics guides the undercurrent of the story. It's a wondertul way to see magical realism at play as Kiamling struggles to balance her job, family, the community, love, and the government. The worldbuilding and how the two cultures are woven together is mastertul.
I recommend this book for those who love historical fiction with a twist.
