A question posed by @franceswrites.bsky.social during a long industry discussion. Can you think of a SFF book in the past 5 years which was a breakout success, WITHOUT being a) in a crate; b) from an established author; c) an indie success ported to trad? Cause we were struggling.

If you’re curious what “underselling” looks like, GWATF shifted about 700 print copies since launch, or about 1k all formats discounting special editions (your pub won’t count special editions when considering new contracts, bc that’s unreliable for future sales predictions).

This is TMI, but we’re in the process of trying to recontract atm and I feel like I’m undergoing a performance review where I dont know how I’ve done, and where I’m being judged on outcomes I have no control over (ie sales). I don’t know whether I get promotion or demotion or a slow death.

I love the book I have that’s in edits, with an uncomplicated kind of pride that I could not take in my first two novels. But it still doesn’t have a title and isn’t officially announced (not out till next Oct) so there is absolutely no place to discuss it on a meaningful way 🤣

because it harms their economy, and Canadian businesses. Whereas tariffs (strategically implemented as Trump does) help USA businesses, either way.

no, thats not the case at all.
In reality, Carney met with Democrat leaders who convinced him to scuttle the trade deal with the US ahead of the midterms. They promised a much better deal once they take control of Congress.

As per statements from PM Carney and several provincial premiers the United States was very much trying to dictate who Canada could sign trade deals with. Do you have any sources for your assertion that democrats convinced Dr carney to call off the negotiations?

All you have to do is listen to the way a man sometimes talks to his wife at a table of people and notice how intent he is on making his point even though her lower lip is beginning to quiver,

If anything good comes out of AI trying to ruin trad, please let it be that imprints stop feverishly fighting over books based on pitch, sample, and FOMO hype trains So many crappy, badly executed books (incl AI ones) sound good as a slick pitch. The reality of them is very different.

I started out by cutting 7k from this novel in edits. Went down to a nice trim 107k. Since then I've added 10k back in (total of 117) and there's still a fair bit to go 😹 i think it's very likely that I'll close out at 125k which is nearly unheard of for me ☠️

I found a 1960s mini mod dress for £30(!) on Vinted to wear after the ceremony. The seller said it was hers in 1968, and that "unfortunately the marriage didn't last, but I always loved the dress." Then she showed me her wedding photo with her ex cut out, and I am living for this level of petty 😆
