Unbreakable
Riley’s Law is an internet law coined by Riley Quinn of the TrashFuture podcast. It states that, "Once you post transphobia, you never post normally again."

This is in reference to a number of high-profile public figures who have entered into a downward spiral of accepting far-right conspiracy theories after publicly engaging in transphobia, such as Rita Panahi, Tulsi Gabbard, and Graham Lineham.

Today’s poem is called ‘Love Excels’.
[image description: a poem embedded in an Excel spreadsheet with the words contained within individual cells. Line 3 has words in a single merged cell. Line 4 has text wrapping applied. Line 8 has filters applied to each word]

Love Excels

Let’s spread ourselves on sheets of love
and turn our data into poetry.
Our cells shall merge themselves together
As you wrap your text around me.

Our sum is greater than our parts,
let’s crunch our figures without compunction.
Remove this filter from my heart –
you give me form and function.

We shall frolic among the formulae,
pivot our tables now and often.
I will total all your rows
and you can add my column.

Edinburgh open air theatre to host first concert for around 80 years
An open air terraced amphitheatre will stage its first concert in around 80 years for a free show by the Edinburgh Brass Band. Taking up the mantle at the Braidburn Valley Park - south of Morningside - which has welcomed a kaleidoscope of different performers over its history, is the Edinburgh Brass Band, who will gather there at 1pm on Saturday 1 August. The last advertised use of the open air theatre was for a touring programme of children's puppet shows in 1988, while it is thought to have been last used for a concert 80 years ago.

As ever, happy birthday to all June-14th-ers, except one.
Unhappy Birthday to Me

It’s important to share, or so I’ve been taught,
to show kindness to others, to be a good sport.
But all of those teachings have taken a bump –
for I share my birthday with Donald Trump.

For years I knew not of this dark, dreadful fate,
and with ignorant bliss I honoured the date –
but then it got hijacked, sullied, gazumped
by a self-serving bigot, a foul gibberlump.

With him, I would share an infectious disease,
a mouldy bread roll, an infestation of fleas,
a romantic weekend at a toxic waste dump –
but please, not my birthday, Mr. Tangerine Chump.

Alternative dates he’s welcome to try –
12th Febtember, 33rd July.
But 14th June? In a lake, take a jump
and find a new date, you deranged sewage pump.

It doesn't get bigger than this for a tiny local newsletter. This award is yours too.
edinburghminute.com
Officially the best local newsletter in the world!
I'm writing to you with slightly hazy eyes and a sense of disbelief from the 94th annual International News Media Association's World Congress **Global Media Awards** here in Berlin... with an award! A jury of 60 media executives from 26 countries selected _The Edinburgh Minute_ to win the '**Best Newsletter (Regional/Local)** ' award, in a category featuring nominations from around the world. It's as big as it gets, from a news industry point of view, and I still can't believe it happened. I was flattered they asked me to enter, so to win was a genuine shock. No shame admitting I cried. My mum would have been proud. The jury said: > "_The judges loved this entry. A simple but strategically relevant local news model. It shows how habit and community contributions can create a sustainable relationship. Congratulations_." **Thank you** to every single one of you for supporting this hobby project which is slowly becoming a small business. Especially those who pay for it or/and share it with others, and everyone who contributes news, notices and events. It simply wouldn't exist without you. It's been three years of 5am starts for nearly 1,000 daily editions. I've made countless new contacts and friends along the way. I'm grateful to family, friends and everyone who helps or cares about local news. We've become a community and **this award is yours too**. Not sure how to give back to you all to say thanks, but I'll think of something. I've always stuck to my founding principles: keep it free, always link to sources and try to just do one thing well. This award is for every reader and supporter. Thank you! 💡 I also want to share some cool ideas I learned about at this event, as I know a lot of you are interested in ways the media can improve via **purpose-driven and principled journalism**. The thread about the Great Edinburgh Beer Duty Fraud: Boiling the Wort and Cooking the Books
It was 3AM on Christmas morning 1933 when - after a long and cold stakeout - not Santa but three agents of His Majesty's Customs & Excise entered the renowned Bell's Brewery on the Pleasance and caught the brewers in the act of working illicitly. They didn't yet know it but the trio had just uncovered the UK's largest ever duty fraud, one with a record that would not be broken for decades to come. So ended the Great Edinburgh Beer Duty Fraud. And so also begins its story, the story of a company set up by Victorian venture capitalists in "An Alcoholic Haze of Ambition" and which had to struggle through 40 years of economic hardship only to decide that criminality was a course of action preferable to watering down their famously strong beer.
