No wonder the Eddisbury hillfort excavations were big. W.J. Varley’s ‘Bickerton Camp Scheme’ employed 100 unemployed Liverpool men as excavators in 1936. I had no idea it was working at that scale. This is what happens when you integrate working class scholars.

Attention local historians and archaeologists! EHAS is delighted to be participating in the creation of a Historical Map of Hertford, in association with the Historic Towns Trust, and we need your input! If you'd like to be involved in adding sites to the map, do get in contact: info@ehas.org.uk.
The Story of Hertford on a new map: A new historical map of Hertford will be published in 2027, supported by Hertford Town Council and
the University of Hertfordshire.
Exploring the town's long and layered development, from its earliest origins to the beginning of the 20th century, our multi-period Historical Map of Hertford will include lost medieval and later buildings,
cemeteries, earthworks and other sites of interest, as well as those that remain.

A comprehensive gazetteer on the reverse, complete with many illustrations, will explain all the significant features of Hertford's more than 1,000-year history, forming the basis of local heritage-themed events.

The map will be published alongside our local primary schools programme, Place Detectives, which offers free curriculum-linked education packs rooted in the students' own community history.

WE NEED YOUR HELP
Creating something so detailed and historically accurate takes an exceptional amount of time, effort and money from individuals and businesses alike. We are still fundraising to reach our publication target.
Support a lasting cultural legacy for Hertford by visiting: shop.historictownstrust.uk/product/donate or scan the QR code.
Your support will be fully acknowledged and could literally put you on the map!
See our website: historictownstrust.uk or email comms@historictownstrust.uk to learn more.

'Making the starry vault of heaven: unlocking a masterpiece of

Tudor carpentry at Hampton Court Palace'
by Dr Lee Prosser, Historic Royal Palaces

The ceiling of the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace, with its gilded angels is one
of England's greatest 16th century architectural achievements. Yet what appears to be
a stone vault is entirely constructed in timber, and stands as a complicated creation of
Henry VIII's carpenters in the 1530s. A new research project has begun to reveal the
fascinating story of its conception and creation.
