Coelioxys slossoni ssp. slossoni is a sharptail cuckoo bee that doesn't seem to have a common name. A kleptoparasite, it lays eggs in the nest cells of leafcutting bees (like the White-footed Leafcutter recently posted) and its larva eat the host pollen. #Florida #invertebrate #insect #macro
Coelioxys slossoni ssp. slossoni - an interesting sharptail cuckoo bee is hanging upside down to a dead flower stem, clinging with its front four legs and mandibles, resting and waiting for rain to come in. The bee has a segmented rusty red thorax and legs, warm dark brown wings, black body, head, and antennae, with pale yellow in the eye. Though it has a bit of white fuzz in places, it does not have the hairs seen on pollen collecting bees, since it is klepto parasitic and its offspring steal the pollen from host bees. The background of this vertical frame is shades of green.

"The Whole World is Bark" Brown Creeper and Colorful Zale 8"x10" oil painting on panel Inspired by a Brown Creeper exploring the intricate landscape of bark on an older Yellow Birch, before totality during the 2024 solar eclipse. If you explore the bark too, you'll find the Colorful Zale. 🪶🐡
An oil painting of a Brown Creeper, clinging to the curling and craggy bark of an older Yellow Birch tree. A Colorful Zale moth, which uses Yellow Birch as one of its host plants, clings to the bark in the upper center of the painting, in soft shadows. The light is a somewhat surreal warm grey, as the solar eclipse was well underway, minutes from totality. The artist watermark reads: Copyright 2026 Jennifer Miller "Nambroth" featherdust dot com

Oh! I saw a wee bullfrog at the refuge yesterday just right for #ColorADay #GreenSat #Herps 📷🐸
American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) is native to the eastern US, but has been introduced here in the west, and is considered invasive.
It is resting on a floating plank among duckweed and has a nice camouflage pattern with mottled greens and browns and nearly black coloration. A yellow throat would indicate a male though I’m not certain we’re seeing that.

A narrow stream, almost dry, winds its way through a narrow, wooded gorge. Very little water flows in the sandy stream bed, which is covered with stones and leaves. To the left and right, shady, terraced rock faces rise up, densely covered with green moss and ferns. A rotten tree trunk lies across the foreground. Bright, warm sunlight filters through the trees in the background, falling on the green vegetation.

Good Morning & Happy Friday Everyone! Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Mouthful; any bird with anything in its beak Alt. is #Black; any bird with black plumage - A Rook delicately holding an acorn #birds #ECK #birdphotography #naturephotography #ForestFriday #Flyday
A Rook perched on a bare branch holding an acorn in its beak. The bird is left of centre of the frame, facing right with its head turned back to the left. The acorn is being held by the stem so the acorn and cup are hanging from the end of the beak.
The bird is a large, stocky corvid; it has a long, slender, pointed beak and its plumage is all black. The shoulder and underparts have a purple-violet sheen from the bright sunshine.
The Rook is on a small, thin branch with clumps of thick lichen growing along it. It is extended towards the camera towards the right side of the shot. Five larger branches are in the background; all vertical, bare and covered in lichen, against a clear blue sky

We can see the heron's right, yellow eye and orangish beak. S/he aslo has a dark navy head stripe that is visible. The buffy neck feathers are very flowy and hang down toward the log below.
