Got a little bit carried away today with my sampling again. Gotta dry my small samples before I'll have room in the dehydrator for the biggest ones. Red pine habitat. Very different from the white pine spots I'm used to.

Wizardly Webcap - Cortinarius acutus New to me The real name is Peaked Webcap but I feel that was a missed opportunity.
A dark orange/light brown mushroom with a pointed, cone shaped hat. It's growing from between dead leaves

There is a fungal research paper that I've been suspensefully waiting for like the final installment of a movie trilogy. Elaborates on two other publications I use ID keys from. Should be out sometime next year. I'll probably end up stickying a link to it at the top of my page when it comes out

Armillaria sinapina - Honey Mustard Mushroom My neighbour's lawn just exploded with it. Distinguished by their yellow cap fibrils when young. The next closest local lookalikes A. ostoyae and A. gemina would have darker cap fibers at all stages When mature, they can easily be mistaken for each other
A honey mushroom laid on its side on a lawn in the shade of some larger mushrooms. The gills are mostly pinkish white. The stem is internally pinkish brown but is externally covered in white fibers with yellow fibers over those. The veil is membranousA small mushroom in the shade of its larger cousins. Its cap fibers are distinctively quite yellowA photo of dozens of honey mushrooms growing on a lawn in a sunny area.

Mycena metata seems to be the new dumpster bin CV suggestion. I think it's been one of the top suggestions for most of the mycenas I've found the past few weeks, no matter the size, colour, or ecological context.

Gliophorus cf. fumosus - Slimy Smoke Waxcap It may already be too late because I dehydrated it last night, but if it still works when dry, this may give an interesting UV+ bright blue reaction. A less frequent lookalike called G. parafumosus is UV-.
Holding a slimy grey mushroom with some Dicranum moss attached to its base. The cap and stem are both a darker grey, the gills are a lighter grey, almost white. Some mushroom before picked. Growing in a large Dicranum patch next to a leafy area. At this angle the cap striations and reflectiveness of the cap slime are more visible.

The Humpback - Cantharellula umbonata This name probably should have been given to a species that was more convex. Recognized by its repeatedly forking gills, blue-grey cap (which is more grey this time), and its association with conifers.
A grey mushroom growing in pleurozum. A tiny trace of an umbo is there, with a concentric ring around it for some reasonA mushroom with repeatedly forking gills as viewed from below

A gallery view of some default images for Cortinarius section dermocybe. Almost half of them are lookalikes to C. croceus.

Stalked Rosette - Cotylidia undulata A few days ago I saw someone walking along the side of the highway far from any towns that seemed a bit out of place and thought that guy's a bit suspicious. Today I became a hypocrite, but it paid off with some fun finds like these cute little fellas.
An embankment between a highway/guard rail and a forested area. The back of a highway sign is visible, which, on the other non-visible side is telling people to pay up. The leafy trees are beginning to turn orangeA brown fan shaped fungus with a concentric pattern of darker browns horizontally. And my hairThe top of the brown fungus, which is growing in some green, pointy looking moss in the Bryaceae family. Some peg-like Cladonia is visible. The concentric ring pattern on the fungus looks more circular at this angle despite the fungus being undulate margined.

Some neat little Russulas that I can't find a good suspect for. Tiny, white, fragile, kinda sticky.
A little white Russula mushroom growing up from between a more brown mushroom and a bunch of maple leaves. Some leaf fragments are stuck to the topThe underside/ stem of the little white mushrooms. Like most russulas the stem is wide for the size of the mushroom. All parts are white and waxy looking. In the background, the second mushroom is showing damage from me even picking it. It was most certainly not firm or rubbery.

Oh man I just found two colours on satellite view that I've never seen before. Both associated with wetlands. I must know what plant is causing that unusual green. And I also have to ask for permission before going there.

Rhodocollybia prolixa var. distorta New to me Apparently the only brown capped, globose spored Rhodocollybia on the eastern half of the continent. Was originally leaning toward R. lentinoides due to the serrate gills, but my usual sources didn't list this species with a better matching spore shape.

There was recently a cyclist bitten by a coyote in Cape Breton. Hard to say exactly what led to the bite because he didn't even know he got bit until he got away. It's suspected that his escape may have triggered a prey response, but it sounds like it was already aggressive before that.

First #FungiFriday of October, actually feel fall-ish in SC. #FungiFriends from a couple weeks ago. Again, no rain.
Decomposing Earth star mushroom. This was the first one I’ve ever seen! I would’ve loved to find it a couple weeks earlier. It is a moldy looking black and gray mushroom with its edges peeled back around the side sitting in a nest of green moss and leaves. it looks a lot like an odd flower.I believe this is a huge likin, similar to a turkey tail, but growing on the ground. The center is a velvety chocolate color, and the irregular edges pale to deep orange. It is about the size of a dinner plate. This is a more traditional looking turkey tail type lichen. It has grown up around a fallen tree branch, with the blades of the lichen growing around little tiny branchy sticks, which is not something I’ve seen very much before. The colors are faded tans and oranges, with white edges on the lichen. They are growing out of a pine branch laying on the ground that has become covered in lichen and some green moss.

Orange Moss Navel - Rickenella fibula Smallest spores I've ever recognized as spores. Not going to write down any measurements because they wouldn't be accurate anyway at this size.

Starting to think that certain microscope best practices are very climate specific. Despite being in a dusty room, dust doesn't seem to be the major sanitation/clarity issue for me, it's the microorganisms that develop on the INSIDE of the lens that I keep having to clean.

Veiled Purple Waxcap - Hygrophorus purpurascens New to me. H. capreolarius and H. russula lack a veil so those were simple to rule out. H. erubescens has yellowing cap goo, which isn't always going to be visible, but I'd have been seeing larger spores if it were that.

These circles are my mortal enemy. They tend to exclusively show up when I'm looking at fungi whose spores are globose or close to that.
A bunch of damn dirty circles of varying sizes as seen under the microscope. They range from about 1-2um to about 15um

The Cobequid Pass toll section always has interesting fungi going on there. The ditches there are a large artificial lichen barren. And I don't think people have looked deeply into what lives there since the highway was constructed. I regularly encounter records of lichens found during that time.

Catathelasma ventricosum - Swollen Stalked Cat I like cats. Here's the other one for comparison since they're both out.
A non-sticky, large, white mushroom with some greyish discolourationDouble veil not all that prominent, but a photo of the veil nonetheless. It's very thick, white, and lacking in gelatinous gooOverall photo of the mushroom. The stem is quite thick. I hadn't broken the veil yet here so the gills are not visible, but the outer, broken veil is visible in this photo near where the stem met the dirt. Quite a bit of dirt stuck to it below that point

Chromosera lilacifolia var. lilacifolia New to me Conveniently distinguished by its 'lilacifoil' gills, and its general colouration.
A purplish gilled, slightly beige-orange mushroom which is very small, about 2cm tallThe cap of the mushroom which is concave, fairly striate, and frayed at the marginsThe same mushroom in situ growing from what you can't tell is a mossy conifer stump due to it mostly just looking mossy. Bit of glare in this photo, so it looks more white here than the other photos.

Had three interesting wildlife encounters in a row today. Pulled into a good mushroom spot and there was a male ruffed grouse doing a mating display on top of a pile of dirt. Head down the road a bit later and I saw three bears. The mother kinda ran and left the cubs to protect her from me.

Tricholoma badicephalum - Wonderful Headed Tricholoma Quite a rarity, but it seems to like my area as this is not our first or second encounter. Distinguished by its scaliness, lack of stickiness, lack of orange tones, single veil, and its close association with spruce trees.
Holding out a mature mushroom cap in such a way that its cap, gills, stem, and veil are all visible. The host spruce is visible in the background as well as many birch leaves.A mature T. badicephalum cap growing in the leaf litter beneath a spruce tree. The cap is quite scaley and brown and has some whitish veil remnantsA less mature mushroom cap whose scales are still a bit tighter and darkerA look at the underside of the cap of a less mature specimen. Copper's going missing again. The county is going to have to start making plaques out of cast iron or something because there is no longer a sign to mark the old horse and buggy route into town.
