#WaderWednesday A Wilson’s Snipe, quietly hanging out by the canal at Ridgefield NWR this week. Almost in Borb territory with that stocky little body. A snipe's eyes are set remarkably far back and high on the sides of its head, giving the bird a nearly 360-degree field of vision. 🪶📷

Though attractive with their 12 spots and bright green color, spotted cucumber beetles munch on squash and cucumber plants and can transmit fatal bacterial wilt. They also seem to like flower petals.

#BirdOfTheDay theme is #EFG Egret - Great Egret in breeding plumage Flicker - Northern Flicker Red-shafted variety Goose - Snow Geese, Skagit Valley 🪶
Taken earlier this year, a great egret on a gray morning, facing left and standing at the edge of a pond. Everything is quite monochrome, except for the bright orange bill and green near the eyes of the bird. It has its fancy breeding plumage laying along its back.A male Northern Flicker, Red-shafted or western variety. It was foraging on the ground, but flew up on the trunk of a mossytree as I walked the path at Ridgefield NWR yesterday. Striking plumage; brownish with barred back, spotted belly, mostly gray or brown head (the male having a red cheek malar,) and black breastband.White Snow geese gathered in large numbers in a field in the Skagit Valley. These two found a bit of water and were having a drink. They have distinctive black tips to their wings. They appear rather small and stubby when compared to a Canada goose.

Oh! I saw a wee bullfrog at the refuge yesterday just right for #ColorADay #GreenSat #Herps 📷🐸
American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) is native to the eastern US, but has been introduced here in the west, and is considered invasive.
It is resting on a floating plank among duckweed and has a nice camouflage pattern with mottled greens and browns and nearly black coloration. A yellow throat would indicate a male though I’m not certain we’re seeing that.
