There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Sirens After School

I’m thirteen,
and the sirens know my name.
They scream past my block
right after the last bell rings,
like they’re racing us home.

In DC, the streets talk loud.
They tell stories in chalk outlines
and candle wax puddles,
teddy bears taped to light poles
where someone didn’t make it back.

My mom says,
“Keep your head up,
but don’t look too hard.”
My teacher says,
“You’re the future,”
but the future feels heavy
when kids my age hold anger
instead of backpacks.

I see fights start over looks,
over posts,
over words that hit harder
than fists ever could.
One click, one shot,
and a name turns into a hashtag.

We’re just kids,
but the world expects us to be tough.
To grow up fast.
Too fast.
Like childhood is something
you drop on the sidewalk
and keep walking.

I don’t want my city to be famous
for pain.
I want it known for go-go beats,
for murals bright as hope,
for kids who make it home safe
before the streetlights blink on.AG Brian Schwalb poses with Do the Write Thing DC Ambassador Paul Gray.

It’s still shocking to me how much the legal status of children is treated as an issue outside of history. As though it has always been the same, or is peripheral. But debates over the legal status of children were debates over the basis of power itself. Who has authority and on what basis?

Today, DYRS has 204 committed youth, 83 youth at YSC, & 43 youth at shelters. In total, they have ~330 total kids in their care. For FY2027, DYRS is requesting ~$104 M (or ~$285K/day or ~$860/youth/day). Imagine if we were willing to make that level of investment in our youth on the front end.

Curfew news! @brianneknadeau.bsky.social is backing an amendment to tomorrow's vote on extending the youth curfew that would sunset the policy at the end of 2028...a bid to both curtail the curfew's use and perhaps break the logjam that's had the council repeatedly returning to this issue.
Nadeau amendment would sunset proposed teen curfew

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The teen curfew law up for a final vote in the D.C. Council on Tuesday would expire at the end of 2028, under a new amendment being proposed by Councilmember Brianne K. Nadeau, D-Ward 1.

A second amendment by Nadeau would prevent police from bringing teens detained solely for a curfew violation to a detention center.
“I have grave concerns about the law that is before the Council, because there is already evidence that curfews do not work,” Nadeau said. “I’ve heard my colleagues talk about the myriad programs they plan to implement to support our youth, programs that are by far the better approach to supporting our teens and encouraging positive behavior. A sunset to this law provides some urgency to getting those programs in place.”

One of the major factors leading to high youth recidivism rates is early contact at a young age with the criminal legal system. Evidence shows that youth curfew can increase the likelihood of young people becoming involved in the legal system for non-criminal, typical adolescent behaviors.

Her second amendment aims to end the current Metropolitan Police Department practice of bringing youth to the detention facility (Youth Services Center) for curfew-only violations. MPD currently detains or arrests youth as a means to bringing them into compliance with the curfew. Under the amendment, MPD would have to find alternatives, such as taking them home, or dropping them off at a Department of Parks and Recreation youth event or a 24/7 youth drop-in center. Youth charged with actual crimes would still be transported to a detention center, as current law provides. Violation of curfew is a status-based offense, not a criminal violation.

“A curfew violation is not a crime and should not be treated as such, Nadeau said. “All evidence suggests that exposing children to a carceral environment and treating them like criminals can lead to actual criminal behavior that…
