Come talk about me at the MLA! It's a guaranteed session.
The Edith Wharton International Society seeks panels for a roundtable on “Wharton in Context” for the MLA Convention in Los Angeles, January 7-10, 2027.
We welcome submissions on Wharton’s work in the context of other disciplines, figures from her period, greater movements in history and literary and cultural trends, and Wharton in relation to other writers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries from a broad range of theoretical perspectives including transmedial approaches. Proposals for presentations no longer than fifteen minutes should include a title, your name and affiliation, and a 200- to 400-word abstract in the body of an email to Arielle Zibrak at azibrak@uwyo.edu
As this is an MLA panel, all MLA program participants must be members of the Modern Language Association by April 1, 2026. Become part of the MLA and join here: https://www.mla.org/Membership/About-Membership

We’re now in the Second Gilded Age. As in the first, America’s wealth is in the hands of a few, conspicuous consumption exists alongside homelessness and hunger, monopolies crush competition, money corrupts politics, and working people are abused and exploited. The good news? Just like back then, we can fix it.

Lady Helen Vincent, Viscountess d’Abernon by John Singer Sargent (American) - Oil on canvas / 1904 - Birmingham Museum of Art (Alabama) #womeninart #art #oilpainting #Sargent #JohnSingerSargent #artwork #fineart #portraitofawoman #style #BirminghamMuseumofArt #AmericanArt #womensart #AmericanArtist
American artist John Singer Sargent painted this portrait of Lady Helen Vincent in Venice, Italy. A glimpse of the Grand Canal is visible through the balustrade in the lower-left corner. He elongates Lady Helen’s limbs, underscoring her gracefulness, while the long black silk dress emphasizes her milk-white skin, a sign of her nobility.

Her direct but pensive gaze suggests her intellect: she was a member of The Souls, a salon of prominent intellectuals that included Henry James and Edith Wharton. She is believed to have been the model for the characters of Lady Thisbe Crowborough in Max Beerbohm's story "Hilary Maltby and Stephen Braxton" (1919) and for Lady Irene Silvester in Maurice Baring's story "A Luncheon Party" (1925).

Lady Helen was born into privilege at 20 Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, London, the daughter of William Duncombe and Mabel Violet Graham. She and her sister, Hermione, Duchess of Leinster, were renowned as leading beauties in their circle.

Helen married Sir Edgar Vincent, then a governor of the Imperial Ottoman Bank in Constantinople on September 24, 1890. Lady Helen, in that period, was "the most celebrated hostess of her age and was - by reason of her outstanding beauty, intelligence and charm - one of the most resplendent figures".

Sargent was a preeminent American portraitist of the Gilded Age. With his brilliant bravura brushwork, flair for rich colors, and dramatic juxtaposition of light and dark tones, he made striking images of the American and European elite.

Born to American parents in Italy, Sargent spent most of his life in Europe, where he traveled extensively, studying the work of the Old Masters. He greatly admired Diego Velázquez’s realism and Frans Hals’s painterly brush strokes, both of which he would incorporate into his own work.
