Allen's Chipmunks (Neotamias senex) are one of a few North American chippies who pack on the pre-winter lbs. They chonk up to as much as 20% more than normal weight. This chubby cutie def read the manual & is following instructions! 🤣 (srsly chunkiest chip I've ever seen) #mammals #becurious

Amazing find on our bird surveys this morning, a White-winged Crossbill wandering out on the plains! At least the House Finch flock made them feel welcome.

This isn’t by accident, this is on purpose. So that people become dependent on services consolidated into the hands of big corporations. Towns stretched to the max have to turn to AI corporations to provide any semblance of service to their residents. And the untaxed corporate heads profit more.

Last two years: not only about the targeted destruction of federal government, but also the destruction of local government. By destroying local sales tax revenues, this cuts off local services and eliminates public servants that help maintain parks, streets, electricity, water, sewers, etc.

Although I work with all wildlife and ecology, it’s really hard concentrating on multiple species as a municipal biologist. I have to remind myself even at this late point in my career that my strength will always be birds. It’s OK to be a specialist in an ecological field.

Not exactly 😉 I’ve heard or seen that many species from my yard (flyovers, birds across the way in the common area) I’m in a townhouse. I guess I should say it’s the number of birds I’ve detected from or in my yard. And all heard or seen by me, so it’s organically correct.

Autumn always brings some melancholy. The symphony of buzzing and chirping grows quiet; the light is thinner. Made me happy today to see one of my favourite trees - a big old Aspen on the other riverbank. Tough to pick out in summer, conspicuous white trunks in winter, and now... look at her glow!
View across a smooth river to the opposite shore, which has a slope covered in low shrubs in fall colours. Near the edge of the river is a large, very vibrant yellow tree.

A few minutes earlier, I knew the squirrel was around because I found where it had clipped off the pine needles at the tip of a branch and had eaten the bark off the twigs holding the needle clusters on the pine.
Twig ends from a ponderosa pine. They have been stripped of the nutritious bark by a squirrel. Leaving two tiny little twigs on the forest floor that have no bark.Nipped off pine clusters at the tip of a branch. One of the best nature signs for an Abert’s squirrel.

I had the joy today of running into an Abert’s Squirrel. Intimately tied to Ponderosa Pines, it eats the cambium of the new spring growth at the tips of branches. The trees counter using bitter terpenes to reduce squirrel herbivory. Thus the squirrels have favorite trees that have less terpenes.
