There was a long stretch when Starz was producing consistently excellent original programming. It's sad to see that they might still be matching that quality sometimes, because they lost all my good will after the second spinoff of a crime drama that had already long overstayed its welcome.

We're too far-gone for this problem to be seriously motivated by government regulation. The solution begins at the citizen level, with people reducing consumption of corporate media and shifting toward independent, local, and *interpersonal* sources for both information and entertainment.

I'm just gonna bookmark this for future reference when Dem pundits complain about how the party has trouble communicating its message to voters. The reason you keep running into trouble with your branding isn't campus radicals. The reason is that your opponents purchased all the media outlets.

Maybe a hot take, but I think that making it super frustrating should entail making it viscerally embarrassing. I've seen people struggling to turn their urban assault vehicles around on my dead end street, and I can imagine how much more undesirable that would be if I stepped out to laugh at them.

Did he just gun the engine, or did your son get "coal rolled"? It wasn't until years after I first witnessed the phenomenon that I learned truck drivers actually modify their vehicles to release that black smoke, paying extra money for the privilege of assaulting people without leaving their seat.

Tbh, this is why I moved to a place where I don’t need to own a car. My wrath was for other drivers, not pedestrians or cyclists, but I don’t like who I become when driving. It’s easier to just not drive than to change that. Like a mean drunk just abstaining from alcohol.

Every time someone blames corporations for consumer behavior, I remember that I witnessed the Rise of Keurig, during which millions of Americans made the conscious decision to replace their perfectly functional coffee makers with a new machine that guarantees voluntary plastic waste with every cup.

Civic religion is really weird, because everyone can see that its rules and preoccupations are just as arbitrary as in ordinary religion, but the absence of a specific cosmology means that everyone gets to just pretend that no they aren't.

Addendum: one of the many revelations in “Supremacy” by @daphnarenan.bsky.social and @nikobowie.bsky.social is that the original originalist was Sam Ervin, Watergate hero and staunch segregationist, who argued the Civil Rights Act was unconstitutional because things didn’t use to be that way.

you have to do good policy because it's the right thing to do, and then you have to find a way to sell it* to the public because democracy and accountability are important, but you can't go chasing the public. *or, frankly, to do it without them noticing.

I say this a lot, but I'll never get over the fact that a huge portion of the American electorate believed that deporting all the criminals while leaving everyone else alone was not only totally feasible but trivially easy and that before Donald Trump, every president had simply chosen to not do it.

This is very believable to me, because there's a guy who works in my neighborhood whom I've seen wearing a MAGA hat and proclaiming that Trump deserves to be on Mt. Rushmore, and several weeks ago, he said to me, "I don't know anyone who voted for him."

Story time. My wife's post here reminds me of one of my favorite stories from my time on the Hill, of which there are many. I was in Comms for a Dem member, and the Caucus would put on a weekly talking points seminar for comms staffers. More often than not, these were run by Third Way.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

I saw a post arguing that LLMs are a highly effective disability aid for neurodivergent people, and it really underscores a gap in worldviews. What I've found to be lacking is *social* support, and as far as I'm concerned, the continual offloading of cognitive functioning to AI is making that WORSE.

Whether or not it results in "cancelation", it sure feels invasive when you get into an argument on social media with someone you've never interacted with before, and they reply "this you?" with a screenshot to a post you made eight years ago which has two likes.

Yes! Image a future where parents put their kids in driverless cars to take them to school while they themselves get in different cars to go to work. Instead of one or two cars chaining trips, now you might have four separate cars making four separate trips. Would be a disaster at scale.

Okay, so I have a plan to get everyone on our side. First, we be absolutely as viscerally unpleasant as possible. Next, we downplay any time we get what we want, say it's the bare minimum and so forth. Finally, if anyone gives up and says we win or apologizes, we belittle them.

In a larger sense, a LOT of people are just really committed to engaging with the world around them as if it is much simpler and more predictable than it is in reality. It seems that most whacky beliefs and practices are rooted in an inability to cope with the unavoidable chaos of existence.

Indeed, what is important in every instance is not whether the blatant abuse of power is ultimately successful, but whether there are real, actual consequences for the attempt. In their absence, it will happen again. It will KEEP happening again.

The three news orgs sue the Trump administration today, seeking an injunction immediately. They will surely prevail, given the blatant illegality - which the Trump administration has to have known. Yet no known official refused to enforce the blatantly illegal order- that in fact is the story here.
