_From a political-institutional standpoint, an absolute judicial veto over legislation with a simple majority vote is tyrannical by definition and makes a hash of the basic checks-and-balances system of the Constitution. That’s why no other democracy has one._

Wrote a thing Monday. Got held back and is a weekend read at the Guardian today. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
While the criminal justice system should address reports of rape, we know that rates of conviction are appallingly low for a number of reasons. Although, thanks to feminist interventions, the legal system is better equipped to understand this crime and less prejudiced against victims, we will not change the world through that means.

After rape allegations at Cornell University, why are women again being urged to talk to their sons? Why not men?

Sexual assault arises in part through both the entitlement and the desire to abuse and dehumanize women, which is in part about definitions of both masculinity and femininity: masculinity in that domination, violation and degradation are seen as status-enhancing, femininity in the perception that women’s bodies are for men to use, women’s voices and rights to be ignored.

The most compelling thing I’ve read in response to the Cornell case is in an essay by feminist writer Soraya Chemaly. She cites anthropologist Peggy Sanday, who told her that there are “rape-prone” and “rape-free” societies: “She found that in rape-free cultures, women have far more authority, status, safety and freedom.”

They’re societies in which women’s rights to bodily and social self-determination are respected, and a man who violates those rights would face severe consequences. “Rape-prone cultures, on the other hand, treat rape as an entitlement in a system that revolves around masculine contests and hierarchies.”

Cover of the September-October issue of Mother Jones Magazine: a white background with the words "50 years of fearless journalism" in black print, centered above the name/logo of the magazine in large Bright Red. Below that in black, the words "the southern strategy — jim crow was dead and buried. Then came the Roberts court."

And then, framing those words, there are two sets of robes: to the left, the simple black robes of the Judicial Branch of the United States Government, as a Supreme Court Justice might wear; to the right, the white robes and hood of the KKK.

A white person's hand with cuff of business suit and shirt visible, reaches into the scene from the right, poised to grab the Klan robes.

Gösta Hübinette (Sweden, 1897–1980) was known for the extensive, artisanal manipulation of his photographs. He had a strong preference for atmospheric, melancholic landscapes. Within Pictorialism, the goal was not to record reality in a purely documentary fashion, but to convey a painterly quality.
The work is a classic example of Pictorialism, a style in which photography is approached like painting, often featuring an atmospheric, dark, and dreamy tonality. It depicts a hilly landscape at twilight or by moonlight, with two trees and a prehistoric monument (such as a dolmen or *hunebed*) in the center. The signature "G. Hübinette 1928" is visible in the bottom right of the print.

I try to teach my students that primary sources allow them to make new discoveries and offer new historical interpretations. AI chatbots present a problem for the teaching of history not only because they hallucinate, nor simply because they threaten to make even conscientious students’ writing less original, but because they thwart the process that might lead students toward original interpretations in the first place. No matter how you refine your questions, the chatbot will generate responses reflecting what the greatest number of users are likely to want to hear, which tends to be close to what they think they already know.

Good job, Seattle Times Editorial Board. Excluding trans girls from sports (or telling them they have to play with boys, which is the same thing) is ritual humiliation. www.seattletimes.com/opinion/edit...
IL 26-638 would send Washington back to the days of “femininity certificates,” when amateur women athletes, including Olympic athletes, had to carry proof that they had passed visual exams and chromosome testing that proved they were women. Under this proposed initiative, parents of girls as young as 12 could be subject to this violation of privacy.

The ballot initiative states that athletes “must provide, as part of the required routine sports physical examination, a health examination and consent form or other statement signed by the student’s personal healthcare provider that verifies the student’s biological sex, relying only on one or more of the following: The student’s reproductive anatomy, genetic makeup, or normal endogenously produced testosterone levels.”

Aside from the humiliation and violation of privacy, testing for genes and hormones isn’t cheap, which would keep girls without means out of competitive sports.
