Meanwhile, detained pregnant women report struggling to access routine and emergency medical care. Anabell, an asylum seeker, started bleeding heavily – soaking through a menstrual pad every 30 minutes. A day later, chained to a hospital bed at a local ER, she was told she wasn’t pregnant anymore.

The US government has targeted thousands of parents for deportation since Donald Trump took office in January 2025. A Guardian analysis of government records has found that, during the first seven months of his presidency, the administration arrested the parents of at least 27,000 children. 🧵

I started reporting this story after I’d been back at work for a few months and was starting to once again feel overwhelmed by the amount of pain and harm and cruelty at work in the world. Talking to people about how they are finding ways to care for one another helped.
