It is, today, 115 years since navy surgeon and Antarctic explorer George Murray Levick saw his first Adélie penguin, after which he wrote several pages of notes about their sexual habits, concluded “there seems to be no crime too low for these penguins”, and saw his findings suppressed for 97 years

I inherited a Betty Crocker cookbook from my dad that was published in the 1960s. It’s the greatest cookbook I’ve ever owned. All the recipes are perfect (except the jello tuna thing but we don’t talk about that). Any time I need a recipe, I’m going there first.

I'm dying laughing at how the cat has conformed to her flower shaped bed today
A white cat is sleeping curled up in a med that has five fluffy white lobes of a flower petal, the cat has half her face peeking upwards and otherwise has filled the pentagonal space in the center of the bed completely

Aha, a very helpful apostrophe history chart!
Anne McCaffrey, whose popular Dragonriders of Pern series included character names such as F’lar. Dragonflight, the first book in the series was published in 1968, but appeared in short story form in Analog science fiction magazine in late 1967. Although McCaffrey may have been extraordinarily influential in popularizing this use of the apostrophe, I did find a few earlier examples.
YEAR DETAILS
1955 J'onn J'onnz (a character), Detective Comics
1959 Hawaii becomes a state (Hawai'i, Maui, O'ahu, Kaho'olawe, Lanai, Moloka'i, Kaua'i and Ni'ihau)
1965 Muad'Dib (a creature and a constellation), Dune, Frank Herbert
1967 TPau and T'Pring (characters), Star Trek, "Amok Time," Theodore Sturgeon
1968 F'lar (character), Dragonflight, Anne McCaffrey (published in short story form in October and December of 1967.)
1969 Pei'ans (a race), Isle of the Dead, Roger Zelazny
1969 D'donori (a place) Creatures of Light and Darkness, Roger Zelazny

Merriam-Webster: 'O’clock’ is a contraction of "of the clock." ‘Clock’ comes from the Medieval Latin ‘clocca,’ which meant “bell.” Church towers would ring bells to mark the passing hours. ‘Cloak’ also comes from ‘clocca’ as the garment takes a bell-like shape around the body.

Chess is hard for humans, but not for computers.
One day, it will be fully solved like checkers.
Between now and then, or even after, have fun.
People enjoy many games/sports where machines are vastly betterThere are more possible chess games, by about 40 orders of magnitude, than atoms in the observable universe. To solve chess, you'd have to map them all. Good luck.

Wrong, all legal chess positions are ~40 oom less than the estimated atoms in the Universe. And ASI will figure out ways to solve and compress that are far beyond what we could possibly comprehend.

Recent history today, but with its roots back in the mists of time, because it’s the second anniversary of a batologist known only as Ralf encountering the absolutely real Pigman of Cannock Chase... 🧵 (Best let me tell the story, though. That’s a local paper website—a real eldritch horror)

Ralf claimed 'something huge' and 'definitely not human' came towards him as he walked around Castle Ring
