BREAKING: The House passed the so-called SAVE America Act which threatens to upend our freedom to vote. The bill could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters by requiring documents like passports or birth certificates to register to vote and forcing voter roll purges. The Senate must reject it.

When I photographed this butterfly (I think a checkered white, Pontia protodice) last weekend in the desert, the air was about 40 degrees F. But the sand was warmer, and that's probably why the butterfly was on the ground and reluctant to fly, even when I got close. Love the blue eye! #BugSky 🌿🐙📷
A macro photo of a butterfly roosting on desert sand, seen from the side and framed with all but the back 1/4 of the wings visible. The butterfly is white with yellow and black scales on the hind wing veins. It has pale blue eyes, and dark blotches on the forewings.

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

there is a paper wasp that showed up a few weeks back and has been wandering between the kitchen and bathroom. it's not hostile and i've let it be, gently working around it when necessary. it took up residence in the bathroom a few days ago and has been hanging out on a square of toilet paper since.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, dark morph. #Fallback to July 14. #butterflies #gardening 🌱
A large black swallowtail butterfly drinks from orange milkweed flowers with her body positioned horizontally and her wings swept back. Her wings have a rusty iridescence in the sunlight that reveals the black tiger stripes. The top wings are bordered with white dashes. The lower wings have a deep blue scalloped border accented with dashes of white and bold orange spots. She is surrounded by other native plants such as green aster foliage and a purple spike of liatris flowers. Papilio glaucus, July 14, 2025. Northern Cross Timbers ecoregion 29a.
