BREAKING: The House passed the so-called SAVE America Act which threatens to upend our freedom to vote. The bill could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters by requiring documents like passports or birth certificates to register to vote and forcing voter roll purges. The Senate must reject it.

When I photographed this butterfly (I think a checkered white, Pontia protodice) last weekend in the desert, the air was about 40 degrees F. But the sand was warmer, and that's probably why the butterfly was on the ground and reluctant to fly, even when I got close. Love the blue eye! #BugSky 🌿🐙📷
A macro photo of a butterfly roosting on desert sand, seen from the side and framed with all but the back 1/4 of the wings visible. The butterfly is white with yellow and black scales on the hind wing veins. It has pale blue eyes, and dark blotches on the forewings.

A reminder to the news media: “conflicting accounts” is what you say BEFORE the incontrovertible video evidence appears. After that, your job is to ask why one side is lying, not to repeat the lie and pretend no one knows the truth.

unclaimed items that they should've confiscated for not being on the form? still intact, unbothered, just covered in coffee. expensive spices? cheese? tea? cosmetics? sweets? all fine, just fuck your coffee and whatever else it happens to ruin. just senseless and mean, i fucking hate these chuds.

idk if anything is missing yet bc she's asleep and i can't ask for a packing list, but there's loose coffee caked on everything, thankfully dry and mostly able to be brushed off. it's just so fucking unnecessary and spiteful, just take it if you have to but why ruin everything else and send it out?

specifically, there was a bag of vietnamese coffee she bought for us that was neatly sliced in half lengthwise and put back into the box slice-inward so it would spill everywhere and ruin whatever it could. the tape was half-assed stuck back on, uncut, and sent to my mailbox.

i know this is so fucking small compared to what other people are going through rn but i'm so angry and heartbroken bc mi hermanita sent me a package full of spanish goods and souvenirs from cambodia and viet nam she got for us and some customs mook popped the tape and took a knife to the contents.

whenever i turn the light on, it flares its wings, but then settles down once it sees that it's me. i think we are friends. i just took it some honey on a chopstick and it let me gently bump it against its mouth and is now eating. idk what i'm doing or what my goal is, but i guess i have a pet wasp.

duskbloom gardens @duskblooms.bsky.social · 22/01/2026
there is a paper wasp that showed up a few weeks back and has been wandering between the kitchen and bathroom. it's not hostile and i've let it be, gently working around it when necessary. it took up residence in the bathroom a few days ago and has been hanging out on a square of toilet paper since.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend on its own. It bends because people organize, resist, and refuse to comply with injustice — again and again, even when the path is hard.

not an answer per se, but my understanding is that the deep taproots pull up minerals and make them more available to other plants, typically in the form of the rotting mulch/comfrey tea, but i'm sure the roots also rot and make it bioavailable at times. i have one under my cherry, curious now too.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, dark morph. #Fallback to July 14. #butterflies #gardening 🌱
A large black swallowtail butterfly drinks from orange milkweed flowers with her body positioned horizontally and her wings swept back. Her wings have a rusty iridescence in the sunlight that reveals the black tiger stripes. The top wings are bordered with white dashes. The lower wings have a deep blue scalloped border accented with dashes of white and bold orange spots. She is surrounded by other native plants such as green aster foliage and a purple spike of liatris flowers. Papilio glaucus, July 14, 2025. Northern Cross Timbers ecoregion 29a.

i have been reading a lot about best rooting practices/old tried-and-true methods and a guy noted figs could root in just plain air if the humidity was high enough can confirm
a close-up of a few fig cuttings under condensation-covered cling wrap, one with two thick white roots pushing out of an old pruning spot. a blurry branch with tiny leaves is in the foreground, demonstrating the expected result.

i was really about to assume that i just didn't like kefir but i tried a second ferment with some fruit and it is far more palatable even if it's not good-good. it's good enough to keep me experimenting with it, at any rate. fermentation is a very interesting game and i'm still not sure how to win.

also, i started making yogurt at home from a balkan strain and it has been fairly successful for a month or so. still haven't totally dialed in the time in the heat chamber for the desired consistency but it has all been enjoyable and edible. i've made some kefir too but only the most recent is okay

looking forward to the rooting now that i have some actual success under my belt. soil, water, willow water, rooting hormone, nothing worked before on any of my attempts for figs, cherry/pear rootstock or columnar apple scions (budded and died). hopefully 2026 is my year, keep those fingers crossed

i did also get some asian pear scions to convert the feral bradford pears: - chojuro - hosui - nijisseiki - seigyoku - yakumo - yoinashi only the southern heirloom (plumbee) took well last year but the 'rootstock' is undeterred and threw up new branches to sustain in the fall, so round two soon.

the elderberries are totally fine and don't need any grafting to be happy and manageable obvs. the goumi are nitrogen fixers and need their own roots to do their magic. they are getting dotted around the orchard areas to encourage their neighbours to grow healthy and strong. huge if i'm successful.

duskbloom gardens @duskblooms.bsky.social · 11/01/2026
- goumi, carmine lg - goumi, red gem - goumi, sweet scarlet - hazelnut, winkler dw the cherries and hazelnut are hedge-sized and easily maintained small, which is why i'm going own-root. the figs obvs are gonna be own-root bc they may die back to the roots even though they're good for my zone.
