Eastern Carpenter Bees stealing nectar from the Azure Sage. Their passionflowers aren't blooming a lot now that the weather is changing, so they have to make do. #bees #nativeplants #BlueTuesday 🌱 #gardening
A carpenter bee is seen in profile clinging to the top of a pale blue salvia flower. She is a large bee with a black head, fuzzy yellow shoulders, and a long shiny black abdomen that is somewhat spoon shaped, with bristly tan hair on the underside. Her mouthparts are sticking out, about to pierce the top of the flower just below the calyx. Xylocopa virginiana and Salvia azurea. The same bee, seen from behind grasping another salvia flower and drinking from the top of it. Her wings are a little frayed on the edges. An extreme closeup of another carpenter bee drinking from a sage flower. A Paper Wasp on the boneset for #WaspWednesday. Polistes fuscatus. #WorldWaspWeek #bugsky #nativeplants 🌱
Four different views of a male Northern Paper Wasp (I think) feeding on white boneset flowers. Here we see the back of the wasp. The curved tips of the antennae identify him as a male. He has a black thorax with one white horizontal stripe and two vertical stripes below it. His abdomen has curved tan stripes alternating with black stripes. The black stripes have concentric circles of rust and tan on each side that get smaller and disappear near the end of the abdomen. The wings are a dark rusty brown. The wasp seen from one side. His head is black on the side and his legs are a reddish-gold color. The wasp has his face in a wispy white boneset flower, his antennae folded down in front of the flower, the tips curved like shepherd's crooks. The wasp grips a flower and drinks from it facing the camera, showing his pale yellow face and khaki tan eyes. Two leafcutter bees on the butterflyweed, and a tiny predator. I took this a few weeks ago, but the females are still active cutting the flowers. #twosday #bees #insects #gardening 🌱
A clump of orange milkweed flowers with two leafcutter bees feeding on it, male and female. Both bees have black bodies with pale gray hair on the thorax and abdomens with black and white stripes. The female at top has black eyes and thick scopal hairs to collect pollen on her belly. The male has green eyes, a face full of blond hair and forelegs covered in tufts of yellow hair that make them look like little crab claws. Megachile policaris. Io moth caterpillar. I think this one is looking for a place to pupate because they eat tree leaves and it's checking out the Standing Cypress. The spines are venomous. #caterpillars #insects 🌱 #gardening #lepidoptera

A Painted Lady on the boneset. A little sad because there haven't been nearly as many butterflies as last year, but glad this heat is about to end. It's supposed to be about 20 degrees cooler here next week. #butterflies #nativeplants #gardening 🌱
A Painted Lady butterfly drinks from white boneset flowers with wings folded upwards. The upper wing has blocks and bars of white, orange and red on a bark-brown background with a few tiny eyespots. The lower wing has a more muted pattern of soft warm browns, white and blue-gray overlaid with a lacy network of white veins, and a row of four small blue eyespots. A Great Purple Hairstreak, my first sighting of this butterfly. The caterpillar's host plant is mistletoe. #butterflies #gardening #nativeplants 🦋 🌱
A Great Purple Hairstreak butterfly feeding on white boneset flowers with its wings closed. The dark gray undersides of the wings have a mauve cast in the light, but the name comes from the back of the wings, which are actually bright blue. The head and shoulders are black with white dots and the abdomen of the butterfly is blue on top and orange-red underneath, with small white and larger red spots along the base of the wings close to the body. There is a swath of brilliant iridescent blue showing along the bottom edge of the top wing, and the bottom wings have tips of black with iridescent green and blue blocks and swishy black hairstreak tails. This is the largest of the hairstreak butterflies, although still fairly small. The plant is Tall Boneset, Eupatorium altissimum. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.

Leavenworth's Eryngo is an annual native to KS, OK, TX. This is my first year to grow it and all my plants seem to die just as they reach peak purple. I thought I'd better catch this last one to show you before it's gone. (Bonus spidey!) Eryngium leavenworthii. #nativeplants #gardening 🌱
Looking down at the top of a plant with many spiky, intensely purple flower heads shaped like little pineapples. One pineapple houses a tiny white crab spider. The lower stem of this plant looks dead and crappy by the time it blooms, so it looks best sticking out of other plants that hide the bottom. I stratified the seeds in the fridge because my direct-sown seeds didn't sprout. My plants only got a few feet high, but I've seen pictures of very tall (6 foot) specimens. A hummingbird feeds from a passionflower, the light slanting in from the ẁest and illuminating the flower and bird. Her feathers are green on top and palest gray underneath, and there is a streak of black from her bill to her eye. Here the hummingbird has her back to the camera and has briefly landed on a vine. A Black Swallowtail on the thistle today. I'm happy because he's the first one I've seen in my garden. Papilio polyxenes. #butterflies #nativeplants
A male Black Swallowtail butterfly sits with wings outspread on a purple-pink thistle flower. His wings are black. We know he is male because of the prominent V-shaped band of yellow teardrops and ovals across all 4 wings. His wings are bordered with white dots and the bottom wings have a row of blue ovals between the yellow band and white spots. There is a small orange eyespot on the inner edge of each bottom wing but they are hard to see because the wings are close together. Here we see him from one side with his wings folded back. The underside of the upper wing looks like the top with a row of yellow teardrops and white dots along the edge. The yellow oval shapes on the lower wing are orange on the undersides. The body of the butterfly is black with a row of white dots down his length.Another view of the butterfly sitting on top of a thistle with his wings partly open. The flower is Tall Thistle, Cirsium altissimum. Here he is sharing the thistle with a black and blue Pipevine Swallowtail on the right. Papilio polyxenes and Battus philenor. An American Snout butterfly with wings folded up sits on a unique Black-eyed Susan with an extra tuft of petals coming from the center of the cone. Tiny bees for tiny flowers. White Vervain, Verbena urticifolia. #tinyflowertuesday #nativeplants #bees #gardening 🌱
A very tiny bee perches on a flower spike of White Vervain, sitting on one open flower while drinking deeply with its face. Buried in the flower right above it. The slender bee is gunmetal gray with a haze of pale hairs all over. I don't know the species of any of these bees--they're too tiny.A tiny reddish bee with stripes clings to a spray of white vervain flowers. The flowers heads have many long green filaments coming from a central point that are dotted down the length with tiny white trumpet flowers that open in a scattered fashion, resembling delicate sparkler fireworks. The plants grow about 4-6 feet tall and have dark green foliage. Birds eat the seeds. This plant was a volunteer, and it's easy to start by winter-sowing in jugs.
