The way the Cornell victim is being publicly disbelieved by a lot of journalists, officials, and online posters is also a warning shot to every other victim not to dare to actually pursue a case against your rapist lest you suffer the same fate. It’s a means of protecting the status quo

If you are viciously attacked by a poodle, you’re likely going to be nervous around poodles, even if not all poodles plan to attack you. We think this is reasonable. When you consider that nearly all women have been harassed or assaulted by a man, why is it not also reasonable here?

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Somehow I missed that, by 2018, at least 4 women were calling Neil Degrasse Tyson a sex pest? One says she was drugged after accepting a drink, then woke up to Degrasse Tyson raping her. And we're just letting him carry on as the beloved public face of science?

The rape, she said, happened one day that semester, at his apartment. He gave her a drink in a cup that looked like a coconut shell, she said, which she thought was water. The next thing Amet remembers is waking up naked in Tyson’s bed, seeing him naked performing oral sex on her. When he realized she had woken up, she said, he began to penetrate her. The rest of her memory of the day is fragmented, she said.

“I came out of it for a moment and shook my head, and then I went out again,” Amet said. “The next thing I knew, I was at class the next day.”

Amet said that the combined trauma of the rape and of testifying in the murder trial prompted her to see a therapist at the university. At that single session, Amet remembers the therapist suggested that she drop out of school, given her difficulties. And so, after just a year in the program, she did. (The therapist, who has since moved to a university in the Midwest, declined to comment for this story.)

Amet’s ex-husband, Mario Vela, told BuzzFeed News that around the time he first met her in 1986, she told him something bad had happened with Tyson, and that he came up many times throughout their marriage.

There is exactly one large, well funded organization in NYC that makes me feel unsafe specifically as a Jewish person, and it’s the ADL

•@NYCMayor Mamdani's antisemitism strategy finally landed and only confirms what we already knew: this mayor does not treat the hate facing Jewish New Yorkers as an emergency and refuses to acknowledge the different shapes it takes. Since he took office 271 days ago, ADL has recorded hundreds of antisemitic incidents in NYC, nearly 40% of which were related to Israel.
After throwing out the IHRA definition on his first day in office, nine months later, his signature strategy still refuses to replace it with any working definition of antisemitism. He has looked the other way as flags glorifying terror groups have been flown outside synagogues, a deliberate act meant to intimidate families walking in to pray, and as crowds gathered outside houses of worship voicing support for the same groups. At the same time, he continues prioritizing his anti-Israel agenda over the basic promises he made to Jewish New Yorkers.

This is a GREAT article... BUT... on this little point, I know way more about *Mrs.* Poppy Cannon (the 2nd Mrs. Walter White) than the average person. & I'm sorry but White's relationship with homegirl (who was married, in PR, & Ashkenazi) was shady... & so I understand why he was ostracized. 😆

McWilliams: Oh, yes, 100 percent. I think about Walter F. White. Walter White fought really hard for our cause. He fought really hard for the nation, for the N.A.A.C.P. He was the onetime president of the N.A.A.C.P. In total, he investigated 41 lynchings and eight race massacres in a period of about 10 years. He was crucial for getting the intelligence that we needed to stop the murders that were happening in the South. So he did this incredibly important work. Why aren’t we learning about him in school? Why isn’t he part of the pantheon? And part of it is that in the second half of his life, he married a white woman. His second wife was a white woman activist who he seemed to be deeply in love with, but he left his first wife, who was Black, for her. And the Black community, essentially, at that time, turned its back on him. There was no openness to that sort of mixed marriage. It was: “Oh, look at white-looking Walter. He’s choosing the other side.”

Based on countless interviews I’ve done with survivors, the trauma they are subjected to for coming forward is oftentimes even worse than the initial trauma they experienced.
