Conservatives simply lack a theory of mind. At its root, the biggest divide in our politics is between those who can understand a thing is bad even if it doesn’t affect them directly and those who can’t

something we don’t talk about: even in AI, “artificial” intelligence — even that is not intelligent design we don’t “design” AI. we merely create a rich environment of data + compute and let the intelligence emerge spontaneously i wish philosophers/theologians would weigh in on that

Musk is a parasite on the future; he preys upon the imagination of others, taking any vision of a better world and depreciating it by hawking options on a transparently fake facsimile. He is capitalism's full-throated assault on the utopian imaginary.

What people seem to feel and not express: 1—AI continues to accelerate at doing well at the metrics. 2—The metrics are incredibly lossy with respect to many important parts of human creative endeavors. 3—We have no collective plan on how replacement of human work will retain what the metrics lose.

New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people www.404media.co/ice-and-cbp-...
Ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee Bennie G. Thompson said in a statement “Mobile Fortify is a dangerous tool in the hands of ICE, and it puts American citizens at risk of detention and even deportation.” He also said “ICE officials have told us that an apparent biometric match by Mobile Fortify is a ‘definitive’ determination of a person’s status and that an ICE officer may ignore evidence of American citizenship—including a birth certificate—if the app says the person is an alien. ICE using a mobile biometrics app in ways its developers at CBP never intended or tested is a frightening, repugnant, and unconstitutional attack on Americans’ rights and freedoms.”

Continuing from the idea that AI will impact art as much as photography did, challenging the artist not only to express, but to express what has never been expressed before. To express that which is not already in the datasets used in machine generation.

This trend seems to be growing here. False comfort that AI doesn’t work or that it isn’t getting better is pervasive on Blue Sky. As a result, people who could add important points of view to current discussions on the meaning & use of AI instead try to believe they don’t have to think about it.

One thing that needs to get repeated until it sinks in is that “AI” does not simply function as a tool that people in power are using; it’s even more powerful as a permission structure for the destructive & extractive things they wanted to do in the first place.
