Probably not a great week for #BlueLights S4 to begin, but I can detach the idiocy of the actual PSNI brass from the drama of the fictional Blackthorn (up there with Hill Street Blues) PSNI. Explosive first episode: loyalists attack a migrant centre, Dublin fascists turn up in support. Great TV.

Drumcree was not just a ‘march’ it was an annual extended period of fear that threatened to destabilize the entire province and resulted in a significant number of deaths. No one should forget that the catalyst for the march being halted was the deaths of the Quinn boys in their firebombed home.

Someone should tell Bryant there already was a compromise. It was the alternate route that's been taken for nearly 30 years and has worked pretty well despite the regular antagonising applications from Portadown Orange District LOL 1 to parade down Garvaghy Road where they're not wanted.

we really don't talk enough about the utter contempt certain quarters of the southern political and media establishment have for northern nationalists. not in a subtle way, not in an "if you think about it" way, just open disgust and disdain for people they would rather didn't exist

If anyone wants to seriously argue that the PSNI could not have foreseen any of this when giving their assessment to the Parades Commission, I would like to know the name and number of their supplier.

Allowing for the possibility that a couple of other players voted with Bazunu, this still pretty much nails it. A piece of me died today - from now on, the rest of the Boys in Green other than him are representing the FAI, they're not representing me, or us.

New blog post. In this one, rather than simply using images as illustrations, I write about the uses to which they were put: "Images of Belfast, 1920-1922." thebelfastpogrom.com/2026/09/26/i...

This post examines the various ways in which images of the conflict – photographs, drawings and cartoons – were used: to illustrate news reports, to make political commentary and as propaganda.

Arriving late to the "new flag for Ireland" debate to say given a UI at the moment is technically a hypothetical surely the more practical discussion is what are Unionists and Britain doing to make sure the Irish feel welcome in the UK in other news 200 cops are coming from Scotland to Drumcree

Wee bump for this. New post coming this Saturday. Most of the time I just use pics to illustrate what I'm writing about, to make a post visually interesting. This one's about the photos, drawings and cartoons themselves and the various uses to which they were put: "Images of Belfast 1920-1922."

I knew Peter Kennedy, the drummer in the Golden Horde, and his partner Jackie. They lived in Dún Laoghaire, not far from the studio where I had my first pirate radio show. Dedicated a song one night to their baby, can't remember her name now: "Daddy plays drums on this next tune."

Don't think I've ever read a book quite like this. Outrageously rich prose that turns the weather and landscape into characters as bleak and doomed as the actual characters themselves. For "The Field," read The Byre. A gothic descent into flames, rage and grief in 1945 Donegal.

Never forget the Luddites, one of the most powerful organized labor resistance groups in history, who attacked machines because employers were using mechanization to deskill their trades, depress wages, and eliminate jobs. Now their name is used as an insult instead of a call to action.
