There's a genre of post I've come to think of as The Bluesky Classic. It involves posting the most obvious statement possible in very large letters. The effect is of someone shouting in your face because they think you're deaf. Nothing does better numbers here. It's almost always US connected.

Jacques Rozier's Du Cote d'Orouet can feel like the happiest movie ever. The three main actresses often struggle to get their lines past laughter at their own japes. It makes a week by a windswept deserted beach seem the greatest holiday ever. When it ends you feel bereft. A low budget masterpiece.

Sure. I do think the perpetual nostalgia-bug in British politics, left and right, needs to be removed. There is no 'there' to go back to. One of the things I do prefer about Ireland is the fact that most people know from their family histories that the past was generally pretty shit.

I think we should end the snobbery against romance novels but in return, we also need to retire the "every literary fiction novel is about a sad horny professor in New England" bit too.

"if you are reading this online, you are using a data centre" is a really poor excuse to make Ireland such a hub for data centres that they're threatening the stability of our power grid, driving up fossil gas use and greenhouse gas emissions. www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2026...

Watched movie of Philadelphia Here I Come. A treat. All those great lines remain so moving and funny. Characters still ring true. Donal McCann! Siobhan McKenna! Reminded me that 70s RTE screened original plays by Tom Murphy, Eugene McCabe et al which made huge impact. Now it's just cops and robbers.

Galway councillor promises no more projects to make walking and cycling safer
-- "I’m happy with my position" councillor says when challenged by a local advocate. A Galway councillor, Cllr Shane Forde (Fine Gael), has vowed to block any future project to make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists while he's still on the council. This morning he posted a photo of the September traffic on Castlepark Road on Facebook, and said: "This is the direct result of multiple traffic lights on the new scheme and the taking away of the slip lane at ATU.

Jacques Rozier's films are an ideal pick me up. They take their time and don't always escape whimsy. But the good nature, the beauty, the affection for places and people and his unique joie de vivre carry all before them. Watching Maine-Ocean this morning was a tonic. youtu.be/T3k79_kFAdk?...

The Republican Senator mixing up Atlanta Hawks and Iowa Hawkeyes reminds me of the features editor who once despatched someone to the town of Shannon to do a piece on Munster rugby. They'd heard Shannon were the province's most powerful club. They were but they're from Limerick city. True story.

BBC4 theatre season is a godsend. Watched Deep Blue Sea. No stiff upper lip in a rawly emotional play with vulnerable people inadvertently destroying each other and themselves. Penelope Wilton, Ian Holm, Colin Firth all great. You feel Rattigan's pain. The situations are unbearably true.

This is a very good point. The ESRI data showed that the sector wasn't in crisis at all yet the government did this on the basis of hearsay and interviews with whining hoteliers. They didn't need to blockade anything, their interests were viewed as automatically paramount.

Stuff doing the rounds about Ireland playing Germany in 1936 indicating anti-semitism on our part. Everyone played Germany then. In 1937 Sweden, Estonia and Finland in world cup qualifying. And in 1938 England not only played them in Berlin but gave the Nazi salute beforehand. Fuck off IDF fans.
