Religious disagreements are just arguing over who has the best imaginary friend.

I think there's only a couple of tours a week and each is limited to 12 people, so yeah, places get snapped up in no time. I ended up following the OPW on Eventbrite and got a notification when new slots were made available.

Finally got to go on the guided tour of the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park this morning. Lovingly restored, wonderfully atmospheric. As is always the case, the #OPW guide was brilliant - informative and entertaining.

There's a surface car-park directly across the street from there, or at least there was when we stayed in Cork in summer 2025. Some lowlifes just refuse to pay for parking.

Back in the '80s myself and a couple of mates were over in London for a holiday/gig/can't remember. On the tube, a couple of local lads started taking the piss over us being Irish. My mate put on his FCA beret and we started talking as Gaeilge while staring at the two boys. Two boys went very quiet.

My da used to routinely refer to her as "Yer ma" as if (A) he'd nothing to do with my conception, it was all down to her, and (B) there was a whole separate category of fourth person singular that applied to her and her only. The underlying message being "Honour thy mother."

I think it was only about 10 years ago the whole nun thing came out. "[Your brother] is home from England, can you call out while he's here, we've something to tell both of you?" Made us realise even more what an absolute force of nature she is in terms of resoluteness and determination.

Me and her nibs went to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast for our honeymoon and I remain convinced we made the better choice. But my folks chose what worked for them and that's fine.

Basically, they were both devout Catholics. And I mean very devout. My mum had entered a convent for nun training or whatever they call it, but shortly before taking her vows she decided, "No, this isn't for me." Her eldest brother, a priest, never really forgave her. But they were devout.

We congratulate poet Paul Muldoon on receiving UCD's highest honour - the UCD Ulysses Medal.🏅 Muldoon has read his poetry for the UCD Irish Poetry Reading Archive, & in 2022 was commissioned to write a poem for the Poetry as Commemoration project. Here is "The Belfast Pogrom: Some Observations".

We need more details! Did they escape and swim to sanctuary? Were they relocated cos of, y'know, cutbacks? Has someone discovered they were Welsh all along and deserve to be let live at home?

He was let stay in the women's hostel on the basis that he and my mum were actually married. Still had to stay in separate rooms though. This was all pre-Vatican II, but that's obviously no fucking excuse. I swear to god, German Catholics make Irish Catholics look downright dilletante.

Curious fact: my folks decided to go to the Passion Play in Oberammergau for their honeymoon. Accomodation was strictly segregated as regards men & women. There was some kind of pre-booking.com fuck-up over my da's accommodation so he ended up with nowhere to stay.

You need ministers for the cabinet-level argy-bargy between different departments' plans. Civil servants just implement whatever nonsense the ministers decide on.

Kieran Glennon @drnightdub.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Spending decisions, including wasteful ones, are made by the government on the basis of civil servants' recommendations. I dream of a government that'd voluntarily decide to sack itself, but I can't see FF/FG being enthusiastic about the idea...

One time when my mum was in hospital, my da made dinner: a mountain of mashed potato with some chopped-up bits of corned beef. That was it, the entire creation. "Da, you know I hate mashed potato. What is this?" "That's Belfast Goulash, son, we lived on that during the war." I went to bed hungry.

I remember Eamonn McCann saying in a talk about 30 years ago, "Every baby born comes into the world an atheist, it's when the adults get at them the trouble starts." This atheist reckons maybe we need a new slogan: Catholic, Protestant, Dissenter and people with no imaginary friend.

On a different note, my da and my uncle (Auntie Anne's husband) passed away within 12 hours of each other. They're buried in the same cemetery, two graves apart. Some stranger is probably sick and tired of the pair of them chatting to each other over him/her.

Then the sister to whom the ashes were sent got dementia. Now Auntie Joan is somewhere in Auntie Anne's house but no-one's exactly sure where and either way, scattering the ashes isn't really on anyone's agenda right now.

My auntie died in Australia, wanted her ashes scattered in Ireland. So her ashes were sent home. My mum and her other sisters thought they'd found a quiet beach in Shankill where they could do it on the QT. My mum started studying the times of the tides. South Dublin County Council said it'd be OK.

Looking at the respective run-ins, I reckon if Bohs beat Rovers on the 12th, we'll win it. If Rovers-Bohs is a draw, Rovers will win it by a point.

Don't have kids but can often hear & see the neighbours' kids when they're out playing. One lad fascinates me, he seems to never just walk, only skip or sprint, perpetual motion. Have said to her nibs that the wee lad's ma must not be feeding him Weetabix for breakfast, but Duracell batteries.

Lady's Day as well in the north, Aug. 15th (feast of Our Lady of the something or other). Got subsumed into commemoration of internment. Was at a History Ireland Hedge School in Cavan or Monaghan about 10 years ago, the chair was gobsmacked when a guy got up, said he was Secretary of the local AOH.

Probably not a great week for #BlueLights S4 to begin, but I can detach the idiocy of the actual PSNI brass from the drama of the fictional Blackthorn (up there with Hill Street Blues) PSNI. Explosive first episode: loyalists attack a migrant centre, Dublin fascists turn up in support. Great TV.
