This is palpable if you spend time driving in both the US and Europe. Driving in the US is much more chaotic and stressful. A small % of drivers in the US are pathological and shouldn’t be allowed to drive, but are anyway. A bigger % are on their phones while driving, which is barely enforced.

15 years in NYC and one thing I have not gotten used to is the widespread practice of double parking in the middle of a busy street (and/or crosswalk, sometimes sidewalk) for an hour or more while attending church. Just ridiculous. Almost too on the nose, honestly.

New phone for the first time in years and it is WILD that presumably whole teams of people decided that, when you’re playing audio, there should be this little dancing waveform visualizer animation at the top of the screen that can be hidden but never permanently disabled. Apple is off the rails.

The NYT says today’s #NoKings protests had “no shortage of skeptics,” and then quoted exactly one of those skeptics: The chairman of the Ole Miss College Republicans (as of 2025.) But of course, the Times doesn’t ID him as such. He’s just a Concerned Youth.

The marches had no shortage of skeptics.
In Oxford, Miss,, Cass Rutledge, a first-year law student at the University of Mississippi, walked through the No Kings protest and around the town square on Saturday and questioned why people thought Mr. Trump was acting like a king.
"He is, you know, a duly elected president who won the popular vote and the electoral college in a landslide," Mr. Rutledge said.
"And so I'm a little bit confused on how he's acting differently than any other president."
He pointed to the stalemate in Congress over the SAVE America Act, the Republican-driven bill to tighten voter identification and registration rules, which Democrats have called an attempt to suppress turnout based on false claims of voting fraud. Mr. Rutledge said that Mr.
Trump was "going through the process" to try to get the legislation passed.

What really jumped out to me from the NYC DOT report this stat came from is how fast the risk ramps up—at 30 speed camera tickets/year the risk is *50 times* the average. The government knows which drivers are extremely disproportionately dangerous, they just getting them off the road.

Once upon a time I worked at a tiny cafe that was mis-delivered like 300lbs of "cooked ham in water" intended for a nearby school. I don't know why someone actually accepted the delivery, but it was a mad scramble to find enough fridge space for it all so it didn't go to waste. Dip sounds better!

The US traffic fatality rate is 12.7 per 100k. Canada is 5.3. If we were as good as Canada (not the best in the world), we would save about 24k lives annually. Maybe the Sec. of Transportation could focus on that. Total US homicides are 23k.

I grew up in NYC when crime was much worse, and I never knew anyone who had been hurt on the subway. Then I moved to Maine & became car-dependent. After just 8 years there, I needed both hands to count the number of people I knew who had been badly injured or had lost family members in car crashes.
